According to a report published by Ookla, Australia is the third best country in the Asia-Pacific when it comes to WiFi 7 adoption.
The underlying data here is based on Australian usage of Ookla’s online speed test during the third quarter of 2026. All told, Australian WiFi 7 connections accounted for approximately 8.6%.
By comparison, WiFi 6 and WiFi 6E accounted for 51.4% of connections while WiFi 5 came in at just over half that figure at 27.6%. Older generations of WiFi made up the remaining 12.5%.
While there’s still plenty of room for the latest version of WiFi to grow and find its way into more Aussie homes, these stats do put it above most of its neighbors.
Singapore topped the list with WiFi 7 connections accounting for 34.1% of total Speedtest samples during the period.
When it came to smartphones that supported WiFi 6 or newer but connected via a WiFi 5 connection, Australia found itself in good company at around 30%. Again, Singapore was a frontrunner at just 9.7%. Even so, this result does still put Australia well above the likes of Indonesia – which came in at 79.9%.
The report also noted that Australia’s median fixed download speed of 180.57Mbps is at odds with the popularity of more up-to-date networking hardware among Aussies. Countries like Thailand recorded a higher average speed despite lagging when it comes to the adoption of technologies like WiFi 7.
On the other side of things, Australian homes that migrated to Wi-Fi 5 saw a 204% increase in median download speeds while those who went for WiFi 6 or newer saw a staggering 527.1% increase instead.
