Now that it's conquered Australia (with hit shows like Wednesday and Beef ) Netflix has grown from an optional extra to a must-have service for fans of TV and film. But before you jump on board, you'll want to consider which plan fits your needs, how you can watch at home, plus whether your current internet service is up to the task.
What is Netflix Australia?
Netflix Australia is the local version of the US on-demand streaming service that allows you to watch your choice of movies or TV shows anywhere, at any time.
Subscribers can view any TV shows or movies from Netflix's vast library of content on a variety of devices: on their TV, on tablets and smartphones, and on PCs or Macs. You'll get unlimited viewing of all available content for a single monthly fee, 100% ad-free on all plans except one.
All of Netflix's plans are contract and commitment-free, so you can change your plan tier or cancel your subscription at any time. Plans are priced according to how many screens you'd like to watch on at any one time, and how high-quality you want your stream to be.
How much does Netflix cost in Australia?
Conveniently, we've also published a guide on the cost of Netflix. But if you want a quick breakdown of each plan, prices are below.
|
|
Standard with Ads | Standard | Premium |
|---|---|---|---|
| Price per month | $9.99 | $20.99 | $28.99 |
| Resolution | 1080p | 1080p | Up to 4K + HDR |
| Simultaneous streams | 2 | 2 | 4 |
| Offline download devices | 0 | 2 | 6 |
| Extra members* | 0 | 1 | 2 |
| Spatial audio | No | No | Yes |
| Ads | Yes | No | No |
Note: Extra members refers to the number of people you can have on your account who don't live at the same address as you. Each extra member slot costs an additional $6.99 per month with ads or $8.99 per month without ads.
Each option gives you access to films and TV shows in Netflix's content library, and there are no additional usage
fees (besides the charges you'll get from your internet provider for your internet plan).
Netflix's new "Basic with Ads" plan makes its pricing more competitive with other streaming services on the market. Here's how much you'd pay for other major streaming services in Australia today:
At the moment, Netflix seems poised to kill off the Basic tier. The Basic with Ads tier allows two simultaneous streams and better stream quality than the Basic plan for a lower price.
Subscriptions with simultaneous streaming are great for couples, families and share-houses. You could be bingeing The Witcher in your living room while the kids watch Stranger Things upstairs.
The $16.99 plan lets you have one extra member who doesn't live with you. With the $22.99 plan up to four different groups in your household could be watching different shows and movies at the same time - plus you can have two extra members. Each extra member slot will cost an additional $7.99 per month. From Basic through to Premium you also have the ability to download shows to watch when you're offline.
The $22.99 subscription also comes with the option of streaming content in 4K (where available), but you'll need a 4K TV to take advantage of it. Our sister site Reviews AU has the low down on the best 4K TVs you can buy in Australia.
Unlimited movies and TV for $10.99 per month is a pretty good deal, but good deals can always get better and at WhistleOut, we love saving money. Here are our top tips to save on your Netflix subscription:
- Keep an eye out for free subscription offers from telcos
- Switch to a cheaper tier
- Cycle between different services until new episodes of your favourite shows drop
Get more detail on these tips and more in our guide to saving on your Netflix subscription.
Does Netflix offer a free trial in Australia?
No, unfortunately, Netflix no longer offers a free trial to new subscribers in Australia.
Free Netflix with Optus
Optus customers on select mobile and NBN plans can receive a monthly credit of $10 or $20 to put towards their bill for a number of streaming services, like Netflix, via SubHub.
That credit can be put towards any service available through SubHub but in the case of Netflix, that could get you free Netflix Standard or even heavily discounted Netflix Premium. Here are the plans that offer monthly credits through SubHub:
- $10 SubHub credit: Optus Mobile $79 Promo Plan or Optus Fast 100 NBN Plan
- $20 SubHub credit: Optus Mobile $85 Choice Plus Plan or Optus Ultrafast NBN 1000 Plan
Optus customers who don't score the free Netflix subscription can still save 5% off their Netflix subscription when they bundle two services with Optus SubHub and 10% for three or more streaming subscriptions.
Which Netflix plan is
best for me?
Which plan you'll choose depends on how many people in your home will be watching, how you plan to watch (for example, do you plan on downloading content to your phone?), and your preferred resolution.
If you upgrade to the $16.99 plan with High Definition, you'll be able to stream most content at up to 1080p, a jump from 720p on the Basic plans. Ultra High Definition - also known as 4K - offers content at up to 2160p, provided your television, computer, or other devices (for example, an Apple TV or PlayStation) supports it.
Basically, the pricier the subscription, the higher quality your video stream will be. Paying more each month also means you'll be able to watch on more screens simultaneously and download movies and TV on more smartphones or tablets for offline viewing.
No matter which tier you choose, you're able to cancel, upgrade, or downgrade your plan at any time. No lock-in contracts mean Netflix subscribers have the flexibility to adjust their plan whenever required.
What can I watch on Netflix in Australia?

Netflix's library is fully stocked with thousands of movies, docos, specials, and multi-season TV shows from every genre. The catalogue contains recently-released content as well as old favourites going back decades.
Netflix also offers a host of original movies and shows, so it's the only place you can (legally) stream titles such as Heartbreak High, The Umbrella Academy, Bridgerton, Stranger Things, Black Mirror, The Crown, You, Squid Game and much, much more. And if you're ever stuck for what to watch, you can use Netflix secret codes to explore by special categories and genres.
For families, there's a huge selection of child-friendly film and TV, which is displayed separately from the rest of Netflix's content. More information on setting up Netflix for your kiddos can be found by scrolling down to our below FAQ.
How can I watch Netflix in Australia?
To stream Netflix content all you'll need is an internet connection and a compatible device. You can either watch at home or on the go with your mobile plan (just keep data usage in mind). Plus, the Netflix mobile and tablet app allows you to download shows and movies to watch when you don't have access to Wi-Fi.
If you're watching at home, you can use your home PC or Mac, your phone or your tablet in addition to watching on your TV. To watch on your smart TV you'll need a streaming device like Apple TV, Chromecast, Fetch TV, Telstra TV, Amazon Fire TV Stick, PlayStation 3 or newer, or a Xbox 360 and newer. These connect to your TV using the HDMI port. Or if you want to go really lo-fi, you can connect your laptop to your TV using an HDMI cable.

What are the best internet plans for Netflix?
If you want to get the most from your Netflix account, you'll need an internet plan that can handle both the amount of data you'll go through, and the connection speed you'll need.
How much data you'll use to stream Netflix depends on the quality setting you opt for. Low-quality streaming consumes around 300MB per hour, while high-quality (High Definition) burns up around 3GB per hour. If you're watching 4K/Ultra HD content this jumps to up to 7GB per hour. Fortunately, the vast majority of NBN and home wireless plans come with unlimited data these days - so you won't need to worry if you're watching at home.
In terms of speed, we'd recommend at least an NBN 50
plan for a family of 2-4 people.
Here are the cheapest NBN 50 plans in our
database:
What are the alternatives to Netflix in Australia?
While Netflix is undoubtedly the biggest name in streaming TV and movies, it's not the only player. Australians can also sign on for homegrown services Stan and Foxtel Now, as well as free streaming options from ABC (iView), Ten (Tenplay), 7 (7Plus), 9 (9Now) and SBS (On Demand). Plus, there's also Amazon's Prime Video and other international streaming services.
Stan offers a wide range of content, including originally-made TV shows and exclusive programming from the Showtime network. Price-wise, plans are similar to what you'll pay for Netflix.
Binge is Foxtel's own take on a streaming service and starts at $10 per month. You'll find plenty of big-name content you'd normally need to subscribe to Foxtel for, such as House of the Dragon, The Last of Us, The Walking Dead, and the award-winning series Colin from Accounts.
Amazon Prime Video is one of the cheapest streaming services in Australia, priced at $9.99 per month with 3 simultaneous streams. Plus, you get all the other benefits being an Amazon Prime member gets you such as free delivery on eligible orders. The library is not as extensive as what you'll find on Netflix, but it does offer some big hits such as Good Omens, Daisy Jones and the Six, Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan, and Rings of Power.
Like Netflix, Apple TV Plus is known for its incredible original content, in fact, it's all it does. It has one plan priced at $9.99 and is home to TV hits such as Severance, Ted Lasso, Morning Wars, and Silo. Some of the original films in its catalogue include Oscar winners Coda and Greyhound.
If you want to watch anything Disney, Star Wars, Pixar, or Marvel, you'll need to check out Disney+, which is now billed at $13.99 per month but also includes Fox content such as the Alien franchise and Bob's Burgers. Disney+ only has one pricing tier, however, which gets you 4K quality and the ability to watch on up to four devices at once.
