Editor's Pick: NBN 500 plans
Dodo takes the crown for the best NBN 500 plan for September. With its WhistleOut Exclusive promo, you'll pay $60.99 per month for your first six months, and $92.99 per month thereafter. This offer is valid until September 30.
This is especially great given the provider reports typical evening speeds of 500Mbps. As such, the plan should effectively be congestion-free.
Here's a pricing breakdown:
- Minimum cost: $60.99
- First-year cost: $923.88
- Ongoing yearly cost: $1,115.88
You need to check whether you are eligible to connect to an NBN 500 plan before signing up. All NBN providers have address checking tools on their websites to confirm you have the correct technology type. If your home doesn't have a FTTP connection, you might be eligible for a free upgrade through your provider and nbnco.
Editor's Pick: NBN 100 plans
Dodo is also our pick for NBN 100 plans, with nbn 100 Unlimited Plan offering the same $32 monthly discount as the NBN 500 plan, giving the same value to homes that are not currently connected to the NBN with fibre cabling.
This is especially great given the provider reports typical evening speeds of 100Mbps. As such, the plan should effectively be congestion-free.
Here's a pricing breakdown:
- Minimum cost:$69.90
- First-year cost: $838.80
- Ongoing yearly cost:$1,030.80
How we chose this plan: When picking the best NBN 100 deal, we look at the first-year cost, plan features, typical evening speeds, and support channels
NBN 100 plans are great for larger households - especially those with plenty of connected devices. The faster speeds on offer can be helpful for large downloads, or when everyone is online and trying to stream at the same time.
However, if your home connects to the NBN over HFC or FTTP we recommend you consider an NBN 500 speed plan instead. Not only does it offer five times the download speeds, but most NBN 500 plans are about the same price as NBN 100 plans.

Editor's Pick: Home wireless internet
Our pick for the home wireless plans this month goes to Optus. Choosing this plan gets you unlimited data for $84 per month on the Optus 5G network, including unlimited downloads. This month new customers get a double discount, the standard $10 off intro offer plus an extra $5 off, bringing the price down to $84 per month for the first year. You also get a Netflix Standard subscription (RRP $20.99 per month) as a bonus included with this plan.
While you might expect this to be a step down from an NBN service, you can expect download speeds of 230Mbps during busy hours, which puts many fixed-line connections to shame.
Here's a pricing breakdown:
- Minimum cost:$553 (incl. modem cost)
- First-year cost: $1,008
- Ongoing yearly cost:$1,188
Editor's Pick: Satellite Internet deal
Our pick for Satellite internet this month is the Activ8me SkyMuster Plus Premium 50 plan. We think the $74 per month cost is good value compared with the other Satellite NBN providers, and the plan's unlimited, unmetered data inclusion and download speeds of about 36Mbps, according to Activ8me. For a limited time, Activ8me is also offering two months free credit, which will be deducted from your 3rd and 6th invoices.
How we chose this plan: When choosing our recommended Satellite internet provider, we look at the first-year cost, coverage, and support channels.
Here's a pricing breakdown:
- Minimum cost:$74
- First-year cost: $740
- Ongoing yearly cost:$888
If you're looking for a faster connection, you might also consider signing up to a Starlink service. You will pay a bit more to connect to Starlink, but you should enjoy faster downloads and still have unlimited data downloads throughout the month.
Editor's Pick: Fixed-Wireless NBN
Dodo's Fixed Wireless Plus plan is the WhistleOut Editor's Pick for this month, thanks to a generous $30 per month discount which brings the monthly fee down to $57.99 per month for the first 6 months. The plan includes unlimited data with Dodo reporting typical evening speeds of 70Mbps download and 10Mbps upload.
Here's a pricing breakdown for the Dodo Fixed Wireless Plus plan:
- Minimum cost:$87.99
- First-year cost: $875.88
- Ongoing yearly cost:$1055.88
How we chose this plan: When evaluating Fixed Wireless NBN plans, we look at the first-year cost, typical evening speeds and consider the value of any included perks or benefits. We also factor in which support channels each provider has available for its customers.
“If you want to consistently pay the lowest price for your internet plan, your best bet is swapping plans every six months and take advantage of the many sign-up promos offered by many of the providers.
While this is a bit of work, it's the simplest way to keep your NBN bill as low as possible.

Methodology: How we choose the best internet deals in Australia
Each month, our in-house data experts review all the internet plans in our database to determine our Editor's Picks for the:
Below each Editor's Pick in this guide, you'll see why we chose each internet plan as the best in its respective category.
For NBN plans, we specifically look at NBN 100 and NBN 500, because they offer a good mix of value and performance. We also consider price, typical evening speeds, and promotional discounts, and only look at plans with unlimited data.
When it comes to 4G home internet plans and deals, we consider price, download speeds, coverage, and whether there's a contract or upfront cost. The same holds true for 5G home internet plans, but we prioritise plans with uncapped download speeds.
And when considering mobile broadband plans and deals, we break up the eligible plans into two categories: plans with lots of data that could be used as the main internet service at home, and plans with less data designed for use on a tablet or iPad. Our monthly picks tend to be the best value plans that meet the usage criteria of each category.
No matter which product category, we also consider support channels. In terms of support, we consider the breadth of support options available to customers, coupled with feedback from customer review aggregators. Due to the scope of telcos we track, we have not personally tested support services for each provider.
When choosing our recommendations, we do not factor in any current commercial relationships. All providers listed in our database are equally eligible for consideration. You can read more about this in our editorial ethics policy.
FAQs
What internet speed do I need?
Your ideal internet speed is dependent on how many people are in your household, how many of these people will be using the internet at the same time and what they will be using it for. We recommend 50Mbps as a good standard internet speed because it suits two to three moderate internet users. NBN 100 plans and NBN 500 plans are between two and ten times faster, however, they can be had for just a few dollars more per month.
For a more thorough breakdown, check out our guide on what NBN speed tiers would work best for you.
What is the cheapest way to get home WiFi?
Most internet plans include the option to get a WiFI modem - sometimes at no extra cost. Just be aware that this is sometimes contingent on staying for a certain length of time. For example, Optus requires you to pay out the remaining value of the modem if you leave within your first three years. Other providers, like Telstra, just require you to return your modem if you leave within your first two years.
When a plan wins the golden Editor's Pick ribbon, it means that as well as being the best plan for this month, the provider has gone into the running for our WhistleOut Awards, judged annually.
Our Editor's Picks are selected by our team of data experts. We may earn a commission if you click on one of the products listed, but a service provider isn't required to have a commercial relationship with us to be eligible for consideration. See here for more information about how we work.
WhistleOut is Australia's telco comparison website, founded in 2012 to help everyday Aussies find a phone and internet plans. As part of our service promise, we're committed to listing plans from at least the top ten providers of internet plans in the market, but we're currently tracking 34. We have commercial relationships with some of the providers in our database and may earn a commission when you click on links pointing to a provider's website.
We still compare plans from providers we don't have a commercial relationship with, but these don't have a button. To keep our listings up to date, we have a dedicated product team that makes around 400 changes to our database each month.
