NBN Co's fastest NBN plans all just got faster, with promised speed upgrades available to internet providers from yesterday.
If you're on an HFC or FTTP connection, you may already see these faster speeds. In some cases, you may see the new speeds after turning your NBN connection device on and off.
In other cases, it's a matter of NBN providers still fine-tuning things in the background. For example, some iiNet customers are reporting online that they've been informed the change may take as long as the end of the week to arrive.
In addition, customers on NBN 100/40 plans may to manually request a new plan from their NBN provider.
Dodo and iPrimus have confirmed that the changes for their customers won't come into effect from October 1.
So far, Aussie Broadband, Optus, Tangerine, More, TPG, Superloop, iiNet, Southern Phone, Leaptel, Launtel, Swoop, and AGL have brought some of the new plans to market for new customers. Not all providers are selling NBN 750 and NBN 2000 plans, but all of the aforementioned providers have introduced an NBN 500 option.
Here's a look at NBN 500 plans available in our database:
Tangerine is advising new customers that delays are expected while it rolls out system enhancements. While Telstra has confirmed it would be passing on the upgrades to consumers, it doesn't yet have the new plans on its website.
NBN Co has delivered these wholesale speed upgrades at no extra cost to internet providers.
However, to facilitate the changes, providers have had to update their infrastructure, so we can't rule out price increases further down the line.
Here's a quick look at what's changed:
| Speed tier | Old maximum speeds | New maximum speeds |
|---|---|---|
| NBN 100 (now NBN 500) | 100/40Mbps | 500/50Mbps |
| NBN 250 (now NBN 750) | 250/25Mbps | 750/50Mbps |
| NBN 1000 | 1000/50Mbps | 1000/100Mbps |
| NBN 2000 (new) | N/A | 2000/100Mbps |
NBN 100 plans have been boosted from 100Mbps maximum download speeds to 500Mbps. Maximum upload speeds on these plans have shifted from a maximum of 40Mbps to 50Mbps.
If you were on an NBN 250 plan, you should now be able to receive 750Mbps download speeds, up from the 250Mbps maximum, and also now with maximum upload speeds of 50Mbps.
Here's a look at NBN 750 plans in our database:
NBN 1000 plan customers won't have seen a change to their maximum download speeds but maximum upload speeds now sit at up to 100 Mbps.
There are also new NBN 2000 plans, these plans have maximum download speeds of 2000Mbps and maximum upload speeds of 100Mbps for HFC customers. If you're on an FTTP connection, then you may be able to get 200Mbps upload speeds or higher if your provider offers it.

These speed increases are new maximums; the actual speed you receive over your connection will depend on your provider's network, congestion and your at-home setup.
NBN providers are required to display typical evening speeds to give you a better idea of what to expect. The ACCC allows providers to use a "holding statement" while actual typical evening speeds are being calculated.
In terms of in-home setups, your modem or router may need to be upgraded to facilitate the faster speeds. If you want 1Gbps speeds, then a WiFi 5 modem may work, but a WiFi 6 modem is a better option. If you have an older WiFi 4 modem you'll want to upgrade.
NBN 2000 customers will likely need a WiFi 7 modem, and NBN Co may need to send you a new Network Termination Device.
Unfortunately, FTTN or FTTC connection types can't support these faster speeds. However, by the end of the year, over five million FTTN and FTTC addresses will be able to upgrade to FTTP for free. If your suburb is now eligible, you can request your upgrade by ordering an NBN 500 plan from a participating provider.
These are the most popular NBN plans with speeds of 50Mbps or higher:
