If you're looking for a reliable, flexible alternative to Australia's big telcos, amaysim has built a reputation as a great value SIM-only provider. After nearly eight years of operation, the company is known for offering competitive bring-your-own-phone plans, plus outstanding customer service. 

All of amaysim's plans give customers access to Optus' nationwide 4G network, including 4G Plus service where available, and you're free to bring your own unlocked 3G or 4G phone. Customers can decide whether they'd like a prepaid or postpaid plan (and switch between the two when required), and as with any telco, you can bring your own number at sign-up (see below for more info).

Types of amaysim plans

amaysim offers two SIM-only mobile options: its popular Unlimited plans (which include unlimited standard Australian calls and texts, and monthly fast data), or its pay-as-you-go Basic plan. Most customers will get the most benefit from signing on for an Unlimited plan, with the Basic plan offering pay-per-use call rates from 15c per minute, data at 15.4c per megabyte, and SMS at 49c per text. 

Unlimited plans all come with a 28-day expiry and start at $10 per recharge, for 1GB of fast data. There's data options available up to 20GB (priced at $50 every 28 days); all of amaysim's Unlimited plans are outlined in the below table.

Plans of $30 and above also include international features. You'll get unlimited standard international calls to China, Hong Kong, India, Japan, Malaysia, New Zealand, Singapore, South Korea, the United Kingdom and the United States, plus 300 minutes to an additional 22 countries on amaysim's $40 and $50 Unlimited plans. 

Whichever plan you go with, there's no lock-in contracts, so you're free to leave or change data inclusions any time. If you go with an Unlimited plan, you can opt for automatic renewals every 28 days, and if you exceed your plan's data allowance, extra data is available for $10 per gigabyte. 

How to switch to amaysim

Changing your mobile phone provider can seem like a daunting proposition. We often get asked about how long it takes, whether you can keep your number, and when exactly your number changes hands. The good news is that it is very easy to change telco in Australia, and laws exist that protect your right to switch and ensure you always keep your phone number.

Your number is held by your provider, but only as long as you allow them to. If you want to swap to amaysim, your old carrier will automatically relinquish your number and transfer it across when you activate your new service.

Here's the process:

1. Find the amaysim plan you're after and sign-up online or in-store. 
2. When signing up, you'll be asked whether you want to 'port' or transfer your current number to your new account. Simply put in your number, and specify your existing provider.
3. After you receive your SIM card (if you order online), you'll need to activate it. Doing this begins the process of transferring your number. If you bought a SIM in-store, this will happen as part of the initial setup.

Note that your old service will keep working until porting is completed. This typically takes somewhere between a couple of minutes and an hour or two, but there's cases where it can take a day or longer. You'll typically know your new amaysim plan is live when your previous service stops working.

SIM cards store very little information these days, which means all of your contacts, phone numbers, emails and photos are either on your phone or in the cloud. Switching to amaysim will not delete any of your personal information from your device.

What happens if I want to cancel my amaysim plan?

As all of amaysim's plans are contract-free, you'll free to cancel or change plans every month. You won't be charged termination fees to leave, although you will forgo any remaining plan inclusions (such as data) if you cancel before its 28-day expiry. 

What happens if I go over my monthly data allowance? 

There's no hard cap on postpaid amaysim plans; instead, you'll receive an automatic 1GB top-up, priced at $10. Prepaid overages are billed at a rate of 15.4 cents per megabyte (provided you have credit), or you can add a 1GB top-up for $10.

What network is amaysim powered by? 

amaysim is powered by Optus, and has access to 3G, 4G, and 4G Plus services, which cover around 98.5% of Australians. 

What kind of SIM cards do amaysim use? 

amaysim SIM cards come in nano SIM, micro SIM, and standard SIM sizes. 

Does amaysim have prepaid plans?

All of amaysim's Unlimited and Basic plans are available as prepaid. 

Does amaysim still have a 2G network? 

amaysim doesn't offer 2G service, so you'll need a 3G or 4G smartphone to connect.

Does amaysim offer international roaming? 

amaysim plans include pay-as-you-go roaming; rates will vary based on your location. Unlike other providers operating on the Optus network, you're not able to buy prepaid roaming packs for your amaysim plan, so all costs will be added to your bill or deducted from your credit on a per-use basis. 

Popular countries, such as the US, the UK, New Zealand, and Singapore, incur the following roaming rates:

Calls: $1.00 per minute to make and receive calls

SMS: 50c per text sent

MMS: $1.30 per message sent

Data: 50c per megabyte, charged per 10 kilobytes ($512 per gigabyte).
