Vodafone has officially flicked the switch on 5G, turning on the first parts of its next generation mobile network. The telco's 5G network only covers parts of Parramatta in New South Wales, but Vodafone says over 650 sites around the country will progressively go live from the middle of the year.
Initial Vodafone coverage will be available in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, Canberra, Perth, Newcastle, the Gold Coast, the Central Coast, and Geelong. You can read more about the proposed locations of Vodafone's 5G sites here.
Notably, Vodafone customers with a 5G device will be able to roam on 5G networks overseas as part of the telco's $5 per day roaming. Initial 5G roaming destinations include UK, Germany, Spain, Italy, and Ireland. 5G roaming will be available in the coming months.
Vodafone CEO Iñaki Berroeta reiterated the company's commitment to not charging a premium for 5G connectivity.
"When 5G arrives to our customers with 5G devices, they will get 5G network access at no extra charge," said Berroeta.
For comparison, 5G will only be included as a standard feature on Telstra's two priciest plans as of July this year. All other Telstra customers will pay an extra $15 per month for 5G connectivity. Optus says it won't charge extra for access to its 5G network in the short term, but hasn't ruled out doing so in the future.
At present, Vodafone only has three 5G devices in its range: the Galaxy S20, the Galaxy S20+, and the Galaxy S20 Ultra. Vodafone 5G connectivity is available on both postpaid and prepaid plans.
