There are plenty of reasons to consider an Optus mobile phone plan. We'll take you through what this telco's plans look like, what features it includes, and how Optus plans stack up against the competition.
Best Optus plans
At the end of the day, the best Optus plan is going to be the one that most aligns with your needs. However, we can certainly help guide your search with some recommendations.
Best Optus SIM-only plan
This plan is not only the cheapest Optus SIM-only postpaid plan, it's also the one with a reasonable amount of data most people would be able to use. According to the ACCC, the average monthly data usage of postpaid customers is just 17.4GB. With 50GB of data this should be more than enough for most people.
But while this plan will be suitable for many people, there's not much point paying for data you don't need. You might be better served by a cheaper plan from a smaller provider – though keep in mind the cheapest plans are often limited to 4G. As an alternative, here are plans on the Optus network that still have at least 15GB of data:
Best Optus prepaid plan
This is the cheapest Optus prepaid plan with a 28-day expiry. Going back to that ACCC report about data usage in Australia, the monthly average for prepaid plans was closer to 9.3GB. Given this plan has a standard inclusion of 20GB, that should be a comfortable buffer.
But once again, there are cheaper alternatives. For one, the Optus prepaid plans have a 28-day expiry, as opposed to 30 or monthly. This means paying 13 bills per year, instead of 12. On top of that, they tend to be more expensive in general. And of course, 20GB is quite a bit above that 9.3GB national average.
As an alternative, here are cheaper prepaid plans on the Optus network with at least 10GB of data:
Best Optus long-expiry plan
This is Optus' only long-expiry with a full 365-day expiry period. If you break the 300GB of data down, it works out to 25GB per month. If you compare this to the cheapest 28-day Optus prepaid plan, this is more data for less money over a full year, barring special deals.
But as always, Optus isn't your only option. Here are some alternative 365-day long-expiry plans on the Optus network:
Optus SIM-only plans
If you already have a phone that you love and need a plan to go along with it, Optus' SIM-only plans might be a good option. We'll go over them in more detail, but here's a quick look at what's on offer:
What's included in an Optus SIM-only plan?

Optus' SIM-only plans aren't stock standard – there are plenty of extras thrown in to make the more expensive price worth it, assuming you like the sound of them.
- Unlimited national standard calls and texts. This is standard in the current market
- No lock-in contract. Optus mobile plans are all contract-free, which means you can step up or down in your plan inclusions month-to-month. This flexibility is great if your data needs change or you want to switch to another provider
- Endless data. Optus postpaid plans are free from excess data charges. Instead, you have a monthly allowance of full-speed data. Once you go over that cap, your speeds are slowed to 1.5Mbps. That's still fast enough to stream video in standard definition, browse the internet, and send emails, but slow enough that you might want to top up your data. Data top ups start at $5 for an extra 2GB
- International calls. On the Medium plan and above, you get unlimited international calls and texts to 35 select destinations
- Data sharing. Share your full-speed data between other postpaid plans on the same account. This is a great option for families
- Access to Optus Subhub. Optus postpaid mobile and internet plan customers have the option to save on a range of subscriptions by bundling them all under SubHub. You can save 5% or 10% by adding two or more subscriptions, including services like Netflix, Amazon Prime, Binge and Paramount Plus
If none of Optus' plans make you want to say yes, then check out the competition's SIM-only mobile phone plans. If you'd like to stay on the Optus network, you can get a plan from an Optus MVNO. An MVNO is just another telco that operates via the Optus network. Or, you can look at plans on the Telstra and Vodafone networks. Here are the cheapest SIM-only plans that have at least 10GB of data on each network:
Optus phone plans
There's a large range of handsets available via repayment installments on Optus phone plans. From the latest Samsung Galaxy S25 to the entire iPhone 17 range. Here’s a look at a few of the most popular handsets from Optus:
An Optus mobile phone plan is made up of two parts: a monthly Optus SIM-only plan and a monthly phone repayment, which is how you pay for the handset.
Optus offers you the choice to pay off your phone over 12, 24 or 36 months. Your monthly repayments are larger on a 12-month repayment plan and cheapest on the 36-month option (which is the most popular).
Optus prepaid plans
Optus prepaid plans come in a variety of expiry lengths. The telco has one short-expiry plan, various 28-day plans, and a couple of long-expiry options:
What's included in an Optus prepaid plan?
- Unlimited standard calls and texts from within Australia to Australian numbers.
- 4G and 5G connectivity. All Optus prepaid plans provide access to 4G and 5G, but your 5G speeds are capped to 250Mbps on seven-day and 365-day expiry plans.
- Data rollover. Roll over up to 200GB of unused data when you recharge before expiry. This is useful for when you have a month where you need more data than your plan usually allows
- International calls and texts. All Optus prepaid plans with 28-day expiry come with 400 standard international minutes to Zone 1 countries, 100 minutes to Zone 2, and 50 standard international SMS.
Optus customer service
We can't judge the quality of customer service you'll get from Optus (or from any other telco for that matter), but we can tell you how to get in touch with support staff.
Optus has four main avenues for customer support; in-store, on the phone, messaging through the My Optus app, and through social media. This makes the support system comprehensive enough that you can get in touch through pretty much any of your preferred means.
- Message through My Optus: Messaging is available 24/7 and is mostly automated, but if the Digital Assistant can't answer your question it will be passed on to an expert who will get back to you with a solution.
- Call Optus customer service: 13 39 37 (Monday to Friday, 9am-6pm local time and Saturday 9am-5pm local time)
- Get in touch through social media: @Optus on X or message Optus on Facebook or Facebook Messenger
Optus mobile coverage
Optus' network covers 98.5% of the population with 4G. This is just a smidge ahead of the 98.4% of Vodafone, and just behind the 98.8% of the Telstra Wholesale network (the full Telstra network has 99.7%).
For 5G, Optus has the second-largest network, with 80.5% population coverage. For comparison, Telstra has 95%, the Telstra Wholesale network has 75%, and Vodafone doesn't publish clear 5G statistics (though it's probably safe to assume it's the smallest).
| Network | 4G coverage | 5G coverage | Network Size |
|---|---|---|---|
| Telstra network* | N/A | N/A | 2.14 mil square km |
| Telstra Wholesale network | N/A | N/A | 1.4 mil square km |
| Optus network | 99.1% | 94.5% | 1.2 million square km |
| Vodafone network | 99% | 94.5% | 1.2 million square km |
Numbers shown are a percentage of the Australian population.
*Telstra no longer provides population-based coverage figures. Boost Mobile is the only Telstra MVNO with access to the full Telstra network.

Are Optus plans worth it?
Optus has a wide range of plans, meaning most people will be able to find something suitable for them. While it isn't the cheapest provider around, Optus plans can have good value when you factor in any extras, as well as uncapped 5G speeds on its cheapest postpaid offerings. In general, its plan prices are cheaper than Telstra, but more expensive than Vodafone.
Optus postpaid plans will get you bonuses like international calls and endless data capped at 1.5Mbps once you use your monthly allowances – which means no automatic overage fees. They also get you access to SubHub and include pretty good international roaming.
Prepaid plans have standard inclusions for talk and text (i.e. unlimited), plus the benefit of data rollover to help you better manage your data needs. They all come with 400 standard international minutes to Zone 1 countries, 100 minutes to Zone 2, and 50 standard international SMS. They're capped at 150Mbps or 250Mbps, depending on the plan, but these speeds are still well above what you'd need for just about any phone usage.
But, if you don't care much for extra perks and want a cheap phone plan with the same Optus coverage, it's worth looking at smaller providers on the Optus network. You'll save on your mobile bill and you can sometimes still get perks like data rollover and international calls, depending on the plan. Just remember some of the cheapest plans can be restricted to 4G only.
Optus mobile plan FAQs
Sort of. Optus postpaid plans all come with "unlimited" data, though your connection is capped to just 1.5Mbps when you pass your monthly data allowance. This means no automatic excess data fees, but is going to be frustratingly slow until the current billing period ends. You can always buy a data top-up if you're particularly in need of normal speed data.
As for truly unlimited mobile data with no download allocations, Optus doesn't offer these.
No, unfortunately, Optus doesn't offer a discount to seniors. Read more about cheaper plans on the Optus network that might suit seniors.
Optus' plans are cheaper than Telstra's, but Telstra has greater mobile coverage. Otherwise, both offer a similar range of benefits, so it really comes down to whether you want to prioritise price or network size.
No, Optus doesn't currently offer a free Netflix subscription with any of its mobile plans.
