Samsung is set to take the wraps off its next Galaxy flagship smartphones earlier than ever this year. While the company has historically unveiled its latest and greatest devices around the tail end of February, Samsung will hold its own event on February 11 this time around.
The event will take place at 11am PST in San Francisco on February 11, which means it will kick off at 6am AEDT on February 12 locally.
Samsung is expected to use the event to unveil the Galaxy S11. (Rumours suggest it could be called the Galaxy S20, but given the February 11 announcement date, S11 would make sense.) Samsung will also launch a second foldable smartphone.
Once again we're expecting to see three Galaxy S11 devices: a 6.2-inch or 6.4-inch device, a 6.7-inch device, and a 6.9-inch device. The two smaller models will be available in a choice of 4G or 5G connectivity, but the largest is expected to be 5G only.
Leaks suggest at least one Galaxy S11 device will have a quad rear-facing camera setup featuring a 108MP primary lens, an ultra-wide lens, a telephoto periscopic lens with 5x zoom (as we've seen on the Huawei P30 Pro and OPPO Reno 5G), and a time-of-flight sensor.
We're also expecting to see Samsung reveal a second foldable smartphone, albeit in a slightly different form-factor. At the end of October last year, Samsung showcased a foldable concept design similar to a flip phone. Much like the Galaxy Fold, the device folds in half, but horizontally rather than vertically.
Instead of getting a smartphone sized device that opens up to become a tablet, the flip phone inspired design seems to be a traditional sized smartphone that collapses down when it's not being used. The revamped Motorola RAZR has a similar design.
We don’t know too much about Samsung's second foldable, but rumours suggest it will use an ultra-thin glass display rather than plastic as we've seen on other foldable smartphones. At the least, this should make the phone more resistant to scuffs and scratches.
Availability for the foldable is up in the air, but history suggests we should see Samsung Galaxy S11 pre-orders start on February 12 ahead of a February 21 release date.
