- Excellent typical pricing
- Great reported download speeds
Bundle and seniors discounts
Flip is an NBN provider that's interested in offering a decent range of NBN plans at excellent typical prices. Those monthly fees are even better for new customers and older adults. If you like Flip enough, multiple successful referrals can potentially net you a $0 monthly Flip internet bill.
Cheap prices don't translate to slower speeds, either, with Flip holding its own in terms of self-reported typical evening speeds. Better yet, Flip plans aren't completely devoid of features, with a good selection of optional add-ons and ongoing inclusions to choose from. And you don't just have to take our word for it, either; Flip has a great reputation with its customers, according to thousands of user scores on Product Review.
Flip's plans and pricing
Flip not only offers some of the cheapest typical pricing for its NBN plans, that value gets even better with new-customer discounts. Here's a quick look at Flip's charging practices:
- No contracts with $0 setup fees (for standard connections)
- NBN services are billed in advance, and the unused remaining portion is non-refundable if you cancel
- First month is charged pro rata
- 14-day satisfaction guarantee
- 30 days' cancellation notice if you want to switch providers
- Low introductory discounts for new customers
- Competitive typical monthly pricing
- BYO networking device; alternatively, add one, two, or three Amazon eero 7 mesh WiFi routers
- Optional phone line national call packs
- Get discounted pricing for referring new Flip customers
- Older adult (senior) internet plans available
- Bundle discounts available for adding a Flip mobile plan
If you're new to Flip, signing up for an NBN plan may mean an initial period of introductory pricing. Even without promotional discounts, Flip is one of the cheapest NBN providers in our database for the plans it offers. At 'worst', Flip is among the cheapest providers for typical pricing; at best, it is the cheapest. New customers also get a 14-day satisfaction guarantee.
Most people shouldn't have any sign-up fees, with the only exception being if you're in a new development, which has a $300 NBN connection fee. Flip is one of a growing number of NBN providers that charge in advance of use, rather than at the end of the month. If you do want to switch providers – and we recommend doing that every six months – you also need to give Flip 30 days' cancellation notice, so time your jump accordingly.
Here's a list of Flip's fixed-line NBN plans, ranked in terms of introductory price:
For comparison, here's a look at competing NBN 25, NBN 50, NBN 500, and NBN 1000 plans from our database.
Flip's internet speed
While not the fastest NBN provider in our database, Flip offers fast download speeds for most homes, and competitive speeds for its fastest NBN plans.
Typical evening speeds
For its three cheapest plans – NBN 25, NBN 50, and NBN 500 – Flip self-reports parity between max attainable download speeds and typical evening download speeds: 25Mbps, 50Mbps, and 500Mbps, respectively. For its NBN 750 plans, Flip claims 640Mbps download speeds, which is decent, albeit not as fast as SpinTel, Superloop, Telstra, MATE, or amaysim.
Flip self-reports 850Mbps download speeds for its NBN 1000 plans, which is one of the fastest comparable plans in our database, beaten marginally by Swoop, Aussie Broadband, Southern Phone, and Superloop. While Flip's advertised upload speeds aren't the fastest in our database, they are still comparatively competitive across its plans.
Flip's plan features
If you want a feature-rich NBN provider, we recommend going with Aussie Broadband, iiNet, or Superloop. That said, Flip does have some key perks, including optional networking gear, mobile bundling, seniors plans, referral credit, and more.
Mobile and internet bundling
You can get $5 off your monthly mobile bill with Flip by bundling it with an NBN plan.
Home phone line
Flip offers an optional home phone service, for a new number or porting over an existing one. The basic add-on is $3.30 a month for PAYG calls. Alternatively, pay $9.95 per month for unlimited local and national home phone calls or $19.95 a month for unlimited calls in Australia, including mobile numbers.
Seniors discount
Older adults (seniors) can access an NBN 12 plan from Flip for entry-level internet. Additionally, older adults can save between 3% and 9% on their internet bill.
Satisfaction guarantee
New Flip customers can cancel their plans within the first 14 days with zero charge for plan fees.
NBN mesh WiFi system
While you can BYO modem, Flip also lets new customers add one, two, or three Amazon eero 7 mesh units to their order. Buying one eero 7 will effectively act as a router, but adding another one or two creates better WiFi coverage.
CGNAT included
CGNAT applies to certain NBN connections, whereby multiple users share a single public IP address. It's not an issue for most internet use cases, but it can impact file sharing, security cameras, and server hosting. Flip uses CGNAT by default, and it's unclear whether users can opt out. You can, however, pay $2 a month for a dedicated static IP address.
Referral program
Flip customers who share their unique code with new Flip sign-ups receive a referral discount. The discount scales based on how many referrals you make and which NBN plan the referrals choose, with a 100% discount possible with enough successful referrals.
Internet credentials may be required
Most Flip customers will connect via IPoE, which means no need for a username and password. But if you're a Flip customer connected via Fibre to the Node (FTTN) or Fibre to the Building (FTTB), you'll be using PPPoE, which will necessitate a username and password to get online. Note that Flip networking gear should arrive preconfigured (if you buy it).
Flip's customer service
While you won't find brick-and-mortar stores, forums, or a chat service, Flip does have a decent number of pathways for support.
