Exetel has enjoyed a long-lived reputation of offering fast internet plans at competitive prices. In the past, that used to be a solid selection of NBN plans with a tendency for new-customer promotional pricing. Fast-forward to more recent times, and Exetel has shrunk its offering to a single NBN 500 plan. The catch is you need to be in an HFC or FTTP home to even connect to it, otherwise you'll be redirected to Exetel's parent company Superloop for more NBN plan options.
If you do live in an eligible home, though, you can expect excellent speeds. Don't just take Exetel's word for it, either. The telco's claim is backed up by ACCC data, and Exetel is consistently one of the fastest NBN providers in the ACCC's quarterly report. While its user reviews were once below average, that's changed in recent times, with a growing reputation according to multiple user-review outlets.
Exetel's plans and pricing
Exetel arguably oversimplifies things by only offering a single NBN plan, which will only be accessible if you're in a home connected via Hybrid Fibre Coaxial (HFC) or Fibre to the Premises (FTTP). Here's a quick look at how Exetel charges for its One Plan:
- No contracts with $0 setup fees (for standard connections)
- NBN services are billed in advance
- Hibernate (speed downgrade) and Warp (speed upgrade) fees for the current month are applied to your next bill
- One Plan customers can cancel at any time, but prepaid fees are non-refundable (older Exetel customers need to give 30 days' notice)
- Competitive typical monthly pricing
- BYO networking device
- Get discounted pricing for referring new Exetel customers
Older Exetel customers (Exetel calls them "Legacy" customers) had access to a range of NBN plans. But new customers from July 1 2025 can only access Exetel's solitary NBN 500 plan. While Exetel doesn't necessarily offer discounted promotional pricing these days, it does have the cheapest NBN 500 plan in our database.
Exetel's One Plan doesn't have a contract, so you're free to leave at any time. That said, because plan fees are paid ahead of the month, you won't receive a refund if you leave before your billing month is over. Because of this, we advise planning the timing of your exit accordingly. With a "BYO modem" policy and $0 upfront fees, the only disclaimer is that NBN Co may charge a $300 new development fee if your home hasn't been connected to the NBN.
Here's a look at Exetel's One Plan:
For comparison, here's a list of popular NBN 500 plans from our database.
Exetel's internet speed
Exetel has had a history of fast NBN plans, and that hasn't changed with its NBN 500 plan.
ACCC results
Exetel is one of the NBN providers tracked in the ACCC's quarterly performance reports. Its download speeds remained mostly the same between September 2025 and December 2025 reports. Of the 10 NBN providers tracked by the ACCC, Exetel ranked second for download speeds during busy hours (103.4%), behind Optus (103.7%). Exetel ranked first for download speeds during the busiest hour (102.9%), beating out TPG (101.2%).
For its busy-hour upload speeds, Exetel ranked first with 91.7%, a single point ahead of Dodo & iPrimus at 91.6%. Note that NBN providers are more likely to overprovision download speeds – that's why percentages get over 100% – while upload speeds aren't typically overprovisioned.
Typical evening speeds
Exetel self-reports 500Mbps download speeds for its solitary NBN 500 plan, which is a conservative expectation given the ACCC results. Using those ACCC percentages, expect around 517Mbps download speeds during the evening busy hours and roughly 514.5Mbps speeds during the evening's busiest hour.
Upload speeds are self-reported as 40Mbps, which is 10Mbps shy of NBN 500's max attainable 50Mbps speeds. Again, that's conservative according to the ACCC numbers; expect around 36.68Mbps upload speeds during the busy evening hours.
Exetel's NBN plan features
Since it started offering a single NBN plan, Exetel has fewer perks than it used to. That said, there are still a few Exetel plan features worth discussing.
Mobile and internet bundling
Exetel One Plan users don't have any bundling options. But if you became an Exetel customer between February 6 2023 and June 6 2025, you may have access to pre-existing bundle discounts for eligible bundled services.
BYO modem
Exetel used to offer an optional ZTE H1600 modem-router add-on for its customers. The Exetel One Plan, though, is sold without any add-ons, so you'll need to bring your own NBN-compatible router, modem-router, or mesh WiFi system.
Internet credentials may be required
Newer Exetel customers won't need internet credentials to get online. Either use the Internet Protocol over Ethernet (IPoE) or Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) settings on your networking gear to get online without a username and password. Exetel customers who signed up for a plan before May 9 2024 will need to use the Point-to-Point Protocol over Ethernet (PPPoE) settings with their Exetel-provided username and password to get online.
CGNAT opt-out
Exetel briefly removed CGNAT opt-out – a network feature that causes issues for server hosting – but it is back now. Customers can contact Exetel support via online chat to opt-out from CGNAT. It is free to opt out.
Hibernate and Warp Speed
Exetel offers a couple of unique features to its customers. Hibernate lets users pay $1 a day, which saves money but slows internet speeds to 12Mbps download and 1Mbps upload. This feature is handy if you're away from home for an extended period.
Warp Speed is the opposite of Hibernate in terms of speed. For that same $1 daily cost, Exetel One Plan users can up their connection speed to an NBN 1000 plan, with 860Mbps typical evening downloads and 85Mbps uploads. Both Hibernate and Warp Speed can be toggled on or off via the Exetel companion app.
Exetel's WhistleOut Awards
Exetel was the runner-up in our WhistleOut Awards 2025 in the Best Everyday NBN Provider category (behind Dodo).
Exetel's customer service
Because customer service interactions can vary person to person, we prefer to look at quantitative channels. Exetel has a strong number of support pathways, and its user reviews have improved.

CHOICE Telco Satisfaction rating
Fastest NBN provider
According to 2025 data collected by consumer advocacy organisation CHOICE, Exetel was ranked the fastest NBN provider alongside its parent company (and internet provider) Superloop. Exetel and Superloop scored a 96% rating for speed, ahead of a handful of other providers tracked in the report:
- Exetel and Superloop 96%
- Dodo and iPrimus 95%
- Telstra 95%
- TPG 93%
- iiNet and Optus 92%
- Aussie Broadband 91%
CHOICE notes there was insufficient NBN satisfaction data to rank Exetel (or Superloop) in its other categories.
Product Review star rating
Score: 3.5 stars
When we checked in with Exetel's Product Review user ratings earlier this year, it was sitting on 2.6 stars out of 5 from 1,900+ user reviews. In December 2025, that rating had improved to 3.5 from 3,300+ user reviews. For comparison, that's in the middle for Product Review scores of the NBN providers we track, comfortably behind the highest rated ones: Swoop, Moose, SpinTel, and Aussie Broadband.
In terms of Exetel's specific Product Review breakdown, users rated Exetel 3.5 for value (2,000 ratings), 3.4 for transparency (1,900 ratings), and 3.5 for customer service (2,100 ratings). It's worth flagging that Exetel has a higher user score on Trustpilot: 4.5 out of 5 stars from 9,900+ ratings. Exetel also has a slightly higher score than Product Review from Google user reviews, with a 3.6-star rating from 1,200 ratings.
