Overall:
There are so many NBN providers to pick from, but where do you start? You might not have heard of SpinTel, but it's actually been around since 1996. A quarter of a century sure ain't bad. While SpinTel has a long legacy, it's currently a popular option for NBN plans thanks to high speeds at low prices. In this review, we'll look at value, support options, and the extras you can get for being with SpinTel.
Before we start, here's SpinTel's current range of NBN plans:
SpinTel NBN plans: Value
In order to judge value, we're looking at the typical evening speeds an NBN provider advertises and comparing that to how much you'll pay for their plans. We want to know how much speed your dollar buys you, and how that compares to the rest of the market. We're not factoring in extras or bonuses just yet. In order to calculate the value, we've looked at NBN 50 and NBN 100 plans, excluding promotional discounts.
Here are SpinTel's NBN 50 plans compared to the competition:
And here is how SpinTel's NBN 100 plans compared to the competition:
Even at full price, SpinTel is one of the more affordable NBN providers around. Better yet, it's also one of the fastest. SpinTel reports plan maximums as typical evening speeds for both NBN 50 and NBN 100 plans. As such, you should expect a congestion-free NBN experience for the most part.
This has become par for the course for NBN 50 plans; the vast majority of providers report typical evening speeds of 50Mbps on the NBN 50 speed tier now. Even if it is the standard, SpinTel is one of your cheapest options for an NBN 50 plan - even when you exclude discounts.
SpinTel is one of the few providers to advertise typical evening speeds of 100Mbps. It's joined by Telstra and Optus but is the most affordable out of the trio. It's nice to know you can get premium speeds without paying premium prices.
What are typical evening speeds?
Typical evening speeds refer to the NBN download speeds you can expect during the busiest hours of the day - typically between 7pm and 11pm - due to congestion.
Because of the way the NBN is designed, just paying for an NBN 100 plan doesn't guarantee you'll get those speeds the entire time. If you want great speeds during peak hours, you'll want to look for a provider that reports high typical evening speeds.

SpinTel NBN plans are all available on a contract-free basis. You have the option to add on a modem for a $110 upfront fee if you don't have one (and $20 in postage).
SpinTel NBN plans: Support
When rating support, we're looking at all the channels a telco has to help a customer, rather than quality. Support quality is difficult to assess in a meaningful way; across the team, there are times we've had a really great experience with a telco, but times it's been rubbish. Instead, we're looking at all the support options a telco has in order to try and gauge its investment in helping customers.
Here is how SpinTel's support options compare to the competition:

SpinTel has a solid amount of support options for a telco that doesn't have a brick-and-mortar presence. You can bug SpinTel on Facebook Messenger or WhatsApp, it monitors its social media presence, you can call up, or you can request SpinTel calls you in the morning or afternoon on a specific day.
Support is available seven days a week, between 8am and 8pm AEDT on weekdays, and 9am and 5pm AEDT on weekends.

SpinTel NBN plans: Extras

SpinTel's only extra is bundling options. If you sign-up for a new SIM-only mobile plan when you're getting your NBN sorted, you can get a great rate. SpinTel has two discounted mobile plans available for its NBN customers: a $9.95 per month plan with 4GB, or a $19.95 per month plan with 20GB.
SpinTel's mobile plans are powered by the Optus network.
