- Bundled mobile plans aren't great
Overall:
Picking an NBN provider isn't always easy. There's a whole host to pick from, each offering their own plans. In recent years, Aussie Broadband has garnered a reputation as a telco that customers genuinely like, but is it your best choice?
Before we start, here's Aussie Broadband's current range of unlimited NBN plans:
Aussie Broadband NBN plans: Value
When judging value, we look at a provider's disclosed typical evening speeds and compare that to how much you'll pay for the plan. We want to know how much speed your dollar buys you and how that compares to the rest of the market, without factoring in promos or bonuses just yet. In order to calculate the value, we've looked at NBN 50 and NBN 100 plans, excluding promotional discounts.
Here is how Aussie Broadband's NBN 50 plan compares to the competition:
And here is how Aussie Broadband's NBN 100 plan compares to the competition:
Aussie Broadband is on the more premium end of the NBN pricing spectrum, but it also reports great typical evening speeds for both NBN 50 and NBN 100 plans. Aussie says customers should get 50Mbps during peak hours on NBN 50 plans, and 99Mbps on NBN 100 plans. That's pretty close to congestion-free.
50Mbps on NBN 50 plans is very much the norm now, so while Aussie Broadband is delivering on speed, you can get the same kind of performance for less.
Aussie Broadband pulls away from the pack when it comes to NBN 100 plans, however. It's easy to get typical evening speeds over 90Mbps right now, but few providers advertise 100Mbps - or a hair off it with Aussie. There are cheaper options, but it's good to know Aussie holds up.
In addition to offering unlimited plans, Aussie Broadband stands out by letting you customise your data allowance. If you don't think you need unlimited data, you can shave off a couple of dollars from your monthly bill by picking from a 100GB or 500GB plan on all speed tiers other than NBN 250 and NBN 1000.
Aussie Broadband also has publicly accessible bandwidth graphs that show how much capacity it has on the NBN in each area, versus how much is being used. These help back up Aussie's typical evening speed claims. It is one of the few telcos to make bandwidth graphs public, alongside Superloop.
What are typical evening speeds?
Typical evening speeds refer to the NBN download speeds you can expect during the busiest hours of the day - typically between 7pm and 11pm - due to congestion.
Because of the way the NBN is designed, just paying for an NBN 100 plan doesn't guarantee you'll get those speeds the entire time. If you want great speeds during peak hours, you'll want to look for a provider that reports high typical evening speeds.

Aussie Broadband NBN plans: Support
When we rate support, we're looking at the channels a telco has to help customers, rather than quality. Support quality is difficult to gauge in a meaningful way; across the team, there are times we've had a really great experience with telco support, but there are times we've been left wanting. Instead, we're looking at the number of support avenues a telco has in order to try and gauge its investment in helping customers.

Aussie Broadband has plenty of support options if you run into trouble: you can call up, you can email, you can jump on web chat, or you can bug the team on social media. The only support option Aussie doesn't offer is in-store, which isn't surprising.
From my own experience, Aussie Broadband support is quick to answer calls and very helpful.

Aussie Broadband customers can bundle on Fetch TV or a mobile phone plan onto their NBN plan.
When it comes to Fetch TV, you won't get any discount compared to the standard pricing - you just have the option of adding your set-top box onto the same bill. You'll pay a minimum of $10 per month for the set-top box itself, and channel packs start at $6 per month.
Aussie Broadband offers mobile plans powered by Optus and has 4G-only and 5G-ready available options available. If you have an Aussie Broadband NBN plan, you'll get extra data on Aussie Broadband's 4G plans, but even then, they're not very competitive when compared to other providers on the Optus network.
Discounts and bonus data aren't available on Aussie Broadband's 5G mobile plans, which cost as much as Optus' SIM-only range and have the same amount of data.
