Today, Optus launched the Optus Family Plan offering four SIM cards, with 250GB to share for $149 per month.

The month-to-month plan comes with four SIM cards, sharing the substantial Data Pool along with unlimited talk and text, access to the McAfee Safe Family App, an Optus Sport subscription, and 12-months free Apple Music per SIM. Additional SIM cards are available for $29 extra per month. Adding an extra SIM card doesn't get you any extra data, however. You can add as many as four additional SIM cards.

According to Optus’ research, 65% of Australian parents are concerned for their children’s internet security and safety, but less than half have any safety measures in place. The inclusion of the McAfee Safe Family App in the plan, which usually costs $8.99 per month, is aimed to help parents keep their children safe online.

While the bonus app access is amicable, coming in at $37.25 per SIM, for 62.5GB of data, the plan offers solid value for money, assuming you'll use that much data. 60GB usually goes for around $50 per month across a range of providers, meaning that each SIM included in the package comes with a $12 saving without factoring in any other additional perks.

Using the provider’s Data Pool, the 250GB can be used by any one using one of the plan’s designated SIM cards through the payment period. So if you and your partner use 150GB, there is still 100GB left to split between the remaining two users before any additional data charges are incurred. Meaning that higher and lower data users can coexist, pulling what they need from the monthly allowance.

Families can also add a device for each SIM card, paying these off interest free over 12, 24, or 36-monthly repayments. While the Family Plan is billed month-to-month, in order to cancel or change plans you will need to pay out the remaining balance of all devices before switching.
