Optus has confirmed it will be increasing pricing for its prepaid plans from September 30. All 28-day recharges will get a $5 per recharge price increase, but Optus is also throwing in a bit more data. Seven-day and long-expiry plans will also be getting more expensive.
Here's how Optus' prepaid plan range will look at the end of September:
| Expiry | Old Pricing | New Pricing |
|---|---|---|
| 7 days | $13 for 5GB | $15 for 6GB |
| 28 days | $39 for 35GB | $44 for 35GB |
| 28 days | $49 for 35GB | $54 for 45GB |
| 28 days | $59 for 45GB | $64 for 55GB |
| 186 days | $180 for 90GB | $200 for 100GB |
| 365 months | $350 for 220GB | $395 for 240GB |
While Optus' seven-day and long-expiry plans currently have a speed cap of 250Mbps, Optus will be removing this with its plan changes.
Customers on a current generation Flex Plus prepaid plan will pay the new amount from their first recharge after September 30. In addition, Optus is retiring a "number of legacy prepaid mobile plans" from August 24 and moving those customers over to Flex Plus prepaid plans. Optus has said it will start notifying impacted customers from today.
Optus is the last of the Big Three telcos to increase its prepaid pricing this year. Vodafone's prepaid plans got a price hike in April, and Telstra followed in May.
Optus' price increase will put its pricing tiers broadly in line with Telstra, but with higher data allowances. Conversely, Vodafone's prepaid plans tend to be a little cheaper, but with a smaller data allowance.
Of course, looking outside of the Big Three providers tends to be the best for cheaper mobile plans. Here's a selection of popular mobile plans from smaller providers in the WhistleOut database, sorted by price point.
