If you're lucky enough to be making the journey to the land of sheep, Sauv Blanc and Sauron, we've got everything you need to know about using your phone overseas. Whether you're hoping to buy a New Zealand SIM card on arrival or roam on your own plan, here's the down-low.
For longer trips, we'd recommend getting a travel eSIM or a local SIM card in New Zealand. For shorter trips or if you need your Australian number when in New Zealand, roaming with an Australian provider is a better choice.
Before we start, here are the most popular postpaid roaming-compatible plans from each Australian telco that works in New Zealand featured in this guide:
And here are the most popular prepaid roaming-compatible plans from each Australian telco that works in New Zealand featured in this guide with a minimum 28-day expiry:
Buying a New Zealand eSIM
If you have an eSIM-enabled smartphone, you can download a digital New Zealand SIM card to your phone when you get to the airport, or even before you leave. You won't need to hunt around the airport for a local New Zealand SIM card. All you'll need to do is download an app or scan a QR code. A travel eSIM is a great option if you're going to be overseas for more than a week.
Travel eSIMs are effectively prepaid as you pay upfront, and they don't renew automatically. If you go over your allowance, you won't be charged extra. Instead, your service will just stop working.
Here's a look at travel eSIMs for New Zealand from some of our favourite providers with at least 5GB and a seven-day expiry:
| Provider | Plan | |
|---|---|---|
| Airalo | $19 for 5GB with a seven-day expiry | View on Airalo |
| Jetpac | $31.50 for 10GB with a seven-day expiry | View on Jetpac |
| Saily | USD$13.99 for 5GB with a 30-day expiry | View on Saily |
For a longer trip, here's a look at plans with at least 10GB and a 14-day expiry minimum:
| Provider | Plan | |
|---|---|---|
| Airalo | $34 for 10GB with a 15-day expiry | View on Airalo |
| Jetpac | $37 for 14GB with a 14-day expiry | View on Jetpac |
| Saily | USD$23.99 for 10GB with a 30-day expiry | View on Saily |
Just be aware that most New Zealand travel eSIM options are data-only. This means you won't be able to make calls or send text messages using any of the above New Zealand travel eSIMs.
If you don't need the ability to make calls or send text messages (and you have a compatible device), the travel eSIM plans tend to be better value than what's offered by local New Zealand providers when it comes to cheaper options.
“When I travelled to New Zealand in 2022, I purchased an Airalo eSIM - the 10GB plan with a 30-day expiry. This data allowance comfortably lasted me two weeks, and the process of setting up my eSIM was very simple. I'll definitely use Airalo next time I visit New Zealand. While Airalo can be a little more expensive than other eSIM providers, it has worked well for me in every country I've tried, and you get a small percentage of your purchase back in credit to use toward a future eSIM plan."

Get a New Zealand SIM card
If you don't have a phone with eSIM or prefer to do things the old-fashioned way, you can pick up a physical prepaid New Zealand SIM card when you land instead. We recommend going with either One or Spark.
One
Rebranded from Vodafone, One has a couple of New Zealand travel SIM options specifically designed for visitors. Notably, the call and text inclusions can be used both for local numbers in New Zealand and for international calls back to Australia. Your options are as follows:
| Price | Data | Talk | Texts | Expiry |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| NZD$29 | 2GB | 200 mins to Aus or NZ |
200 texts to Aus or NZ |
30 days |
| NZD$49 | 10GB | Unlimited to NZ, 200 mins to Aus |
Unlimited to NZ 200 texts to Aus |
60 days |
| NZD$69 | 40GB | Unlimited to NZ, 200 mins to Aus |
Unlimited to NZ 200 texts to Aus |
90 days |
| NZD$99 | 100GB | Unlimited to NZ, 250 mins to Aus | Unlimited to NZ, 250 texts to Aus | 90 days |
One's travel plans don't include MMS.
We'd recommend the 10GB plan at a minimum, and the 40GB plan if you're staying for over a month. It has a 90-day expiry, and 40GB is a pretty reasonable amount of data for that kind of time period. There is a 100GB option too, however, if you have more demanding data needs.
There are kiosks in the arrivals area of Auckland and Christchurch International Airports, and the Queenstown and Wellington Airports, if you want to buy right after you get off your flight. Alternatively, you can visit a One store in New Zealand.
One also offers eSIMs for the above plans, if you want to buy before you fly.
Spark New Zealand
All of Spark's New Zealand travel SIMs last for three months, making them ideal for longer stays in New Zealand. If you're staying for over one month, we'd recommend either its 50GB SIM or its endless plan. Here are Spark's all-inclusive plans:
| Price | Data | Talk | Texts | Expiry |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| NZD$29 | 2GB | 200 mins to NZ 100 mins to Aus |
200 texts to NZ 100 texts to Aus |
Three months |
| NZD$49 | 10GB | Unlimited mins to NZ + Aus | Unlimited texts to NZ + Aus | Three months |
| NZD$79 | 50GB | Unlimited mins to NZ + Aus | Unlimited texts to NZ + Aus | Three months |
| NZD$129 | Endless data, with speeds reduced to 1.2Mbps after 100GB | Unlimited mins to NZ + Aus | Unlimited texts + NZ + Aus | Three months |
Spark has kiosks at the arrival area of Christchurch International Airport and Auckland International Airport. Otherwise, you can pick up these SIMs from a Spark store. Alternatively, you can buy these as an eSIM through the Spark website.
Spark also has data-only travel packs, but these are only available as eSIMs. Pricing starts at NZD$29 for 5GB, which is a little more than you'd pay for an Airalo eSIM.
Spark plans from NZD$39 and up include free data for Spotify. This means any data you use streaming music on Spotify won't count towards your allowance. Given I once accidentally burnt through my travel eSIM allowance by streaming rain sounds overnight without realising I hadn't reconnected to my Airbnb WiFi, this could be a pretty useful addition.
Just note that podcasts will still count toward your data usage.
“If you use any apps that regularly require two-factor authentication (2FA) via SMS, this is something to consider when deciding how to stay connected overseas. If you opt for a travel eSIM or local SIM, you won't be able to receive text messages to your Australian number. The only way to keep getting text messages, for 2FA or otherwise, is roaming with your Australian number. Alternatively, you can see if those apps allow 2FA through other means, like Google Authenticator or 1Password."

Roaming in New Zealand with Vodafone
- Price per day: $5
- Price per gigabyte: N/A
All Vodafone postpaid plans include $5 per day roaming, which covers New Zealand. For each day you spend in New Zealand, you'll pay an extra $5 on top of your regular phone bill. This allows you to use your Australian inclusions - such as data - while overseas. You don't get a separate data allowance for travelling overseas like with other providers.
If you go over your primary data allowance when travelling, Vodafone will charge you an extra $5 per gigabyte.
Note that you can only use $5 roaming for up to 90 days per calendar year.
Here are Vodafone's SIM-only plans with $5 roaming:
Vodafone also has prepaid roaming add-ons. These start at $5 for 200MB with a one-day expiry and max out at $35 for 2GB with a seven-day expiry. These aren't very good value when compared to a local New Zealand travel SIM.
Roaming in New Zealand with Optus

If you go over your 2GB, you'll be charged an extra $10 for another 2GB. This data can then be used over the following 31 days whenever you go over your initial allowance.
In addition to data, you'll get unlimited standard calls and texts to both local and standard international numbers each day. Be aware that MMS is billed at $0.75 per message.
If you've got a Telstra Upfront plan, roaming will work in over 80 destinations. New Zealand is the cheapest country you can roam in with Telstra. Most other destinations are billed at $10 per day.
Telstra prepaid customers can buy an international roaming pack for their trip. Your options are as follows:

FAQs
Can I buy a New Zealand SIM card in Australia?
If you're looking to buy a New Zealand SIM in Australia, there are websites like SIMCorner and Simify that will ship you a SIM to your Australian address, so you don't have to spend time looking for one when you arrive. You do, however, often pay more for this. Just be sure to double-check what these SIMs include, as they're often different to the SIMs you can get on arrival.
You can also buy a New Zealand eSIM through retailers like Airalo before you leave, download it to your phone, and then activate it when you land.
Can I buy a New Zealand SIM card with unlimited data?
Spark is the only New Zealand provider that offers a travel SIM with unlimited data. It's referred to as endless data and works similarly to Australian unlimited data mobile plans, where you'll get a primary allowance and then be able to keep using data at a slower rate. In this case, you'll get 100GB and then can keep using your connection at capped speeds of 1.2Mbps if you exceed your data limit.
