For those struggling with coverage and reception woes, WiFi calling is an absolute game changer.

What is WiFi calling?

Simply put, WiFi calling uses a WiFi network to make phone calls, instead of a mobile phone network. It works in just the same way as a phone call, and on your end you ideally shouldn't notice a thing.

In rural areas that lack phone signal, but do have an internet connection, it can mean the difference between being able to actually use your phone, and not.

These days, many or most providers offer WiFi calling in some capacity, but not all. And it's less common on prepaid mobile plans. If it's a feature you're interested in, you'll need to double-check which plans have it before you sign up to one.

Some providers such might refer to WiFi calling as 'VoWiFi' which stands for Voice-Over WiFi.

Plans with WiFi calling

Before we get into the nitty gritty, the following providers all offer WiFi calling on their plans. Here are their popular plans with at least 15GB of data:

WiFi calling vs. VoLTE

Woman holding her phone up above her head trying to find signal

VoLTE and WiFi calling tend to get bundled into the same category, but they’re not interchangeable terms.

VoLTE stands for Voice Over LTE (Long-Term Evolution). LTE is another name for 4G. Where WiFi calling utilises a broadband connection via WiFi, VoLTE uses 4G to make phone call – it's pretty much the standard for phone calls in Australia at this point

Which devices support WiFi calling?

Just because your telco supports WiFi calling doesn't necessarily mean that you can access it. You also need a device that's compatible, and possibly to enable WiFi calling in your phone's settings menu. Telcos generally provide a list of devices that can utilise WiFi calling on their plans and, in some cases, they may require them to have been bought from that specific provider.

Below are the devices listed for each major telco and any caveats noted. We've looked only at Apple, Samsung and Google from the big three telcos, so check with your provider if your device is not on the list.

Devices that support WiFi calling
Device Telstra Optus Vodafone
Apple iPhone 6 onwards
Apple Watch Series 3 onwards
Samsung Galaxy S6 onwards
Samsung Galaxy S7 onwards
Samsung Note 5 onwards
Google Pixel 2 onwards
Google Pixel 3 onwards

Note: If WiFi calling with Optus, Android devices must have the latest version of Optus firmware installed. Likewise, if WiFi calling with Vodafone, Android devices purchased from third-party retailers may not support Vodafone WiFi calling.

How much data does WiFi calling use?

Enabling and using WiFi calling won’t use your mobile data allowance, but it will use data from the connected broadband network.

WiFi calls use very little data – as little as 100Kbps. It would take hours upon hours to reach gigabytes.

Thankfully, the vast majority of home internet plans have unlimited data these days, so WiFi calling shouldn’t have any noticeable effect on your home data usage.

Making WiFi calls on iPhone

To use WiFi calling on an iPhone simply follow the steps below:

Enable WiFi calls on iPhone

  1. Open the Settings app
  2. Select Mobile
  3. Select Wi-Fi Calling under the label for your network (e.g. Telstra). If you have multiple SIMs on your iPhone, like an eSIM, you might need to tap on the plan you want to enable WiFi calling first.
  4. Toggle on Wi-Fi Calling

You'll know that WiFi calling has been activated when you can see 'Wi-Fi Call' after the network name alongside Network Selection.

Making WiFi calls on Android

The steps for enabling WiFi calling will depend on your phone model and the version of Android it's running. But, in general, they should look something like this:

Enable WiFi calls on Android

  1. Open the Phone app
  2. Tap More
  3. Select Calls
  4. Tap Wi-Fi calling

To test, launch the Phone app and select a contact to call. When Wi-Fi calling is enabled and a mobile network cannot be found, the WiFi calling icon will appear above the contact you are calling. If a network has been detected, you will be able to view it.

Should you use WiFi calling?

There are more benefits to enabling WiFi calling than there are drawbacks, so if you have a compatible device with a participating provider then you probably should turn WiFi calling on.

Pros of WiFi calling
  • Allows you to make calls when you have little or no mobile coverage, as long as you're connected to WiFi
  • Saves battery when in low coverage areas
Cons of WiFi calling
  • Signal strength can be unreliable on high-traffic WiFi connections like public WiFi
  • Some smaller providers may not have WiFi calling

WiFi calling FAQs

What is the downside of WiFi calling?

The main downside to WiFi calling is that the call quality is still reliant on the strength of the internet connection. If the WiFi you are connected to is slow or unreliable, then your calls will suffer.

Is WiFi calling free in Australia?

Yes, WiFi calling is free to use in Australia. You do not need to pay any additional fees in order to use WiFi calling with participating telcos.

Which carriers support WiFi calling in Australia?

These are the Australian providers in WhistleOut's database that support WiFi and VoLTE calling:

  • amaysim
  • ALDI Mobile
  • Aussie Broadband
  • Belong
  • Boost Mobile
  • Catch Connect
  • Circles.Life
  • Coles Mobile
  • Dodo
  • Everyday Mobile (formerly Woolworths Mobile)
  • felix
  • Kogan Mobile
  • Lebara Mobile
  • MATE
  • Moose Mobile
  • Optus
  • Southern Phone
  • SpinTel
  • Tangerine
  • Telstra
  • TPG
  • Vodafone

Can you make an emergency call with WiFi calling?

When WiFi calling is turned on and cellular service isn't available, emergency calls could use Wi-Fi calling instead. Otherwise, if cellular service is available, your iPhone will default to using that to make emergency calls.
