How to choose the best mobile phone plan with international calls
There are lots of phone plans that include calls to international destinations, but not all plans are created equal. If your concerns go beyond just finding a mobile plan that fits you budget, you might to consider these factors when comparing SIM-only plans with international calls:
- The countries you can call overseas will differ from plan to plan, so it's important to check whether the country you will call the most is included with a plan you're considering.
- Some plans come with unlimited international calls to selected countries, while others will offer a set amount of minutes per month, or a dollar amount of credit to use. Be sure to check if there are limits on monthly calls to certain countries.
- Make sure that SMS is included, as there are a few plans that don't include International SMS.
- In some cases, included calls can only be made to landline phone numbers, not mobile phones.
- Make sure that the plan you are considering also comes with enough Australian calls and data to meet your everyday needs.
Frequently asked questions about best mobile phone plan with international calls
How can I call overseas for free?
While a mobile plan with international calls might be the most straightforward way to phone home, it’s not the only option. If you save money, you can always rely on a messaging app rather than a traditional phone plan. You might have to coordinate with your relatives to get on the same page but platforms like WhatsApp, Telegram, FaceTime, Facebook Messenger or Discord will all let you make overseas calls via VoIP (voice-over-IP) at a price that’s measured in gigabytes rather than dollars.
Are there any mobile plans with unlimited international calls?
Yes, some providers do offer unlimited international calls. However, this usually comes with a catch when it comes to the destinations that are covered. For example, Vodafone offers unlimited international calls on selected mobile plans but only to countries that it has designed as Zone 1.
What happens when my plan runs out of international calls?
Depending on your provider and plan, your international calls will either be blocked if you have no credit remaining or you will be charged Pay As You Go Rates. These are typically more expensive than the rates that usually apply, and can add up quickly into an unexpectedly large bill. If you’re out of credit and need to phone home, the better bet is to investigate whether you can purchase additional international call credit as an add-on through your provider or wait until the end of your current billing cycle.
When a plan wins the golden Editor's Pick ribbon, it means that as well as being the best plan for this month, the provider has gone into the running for our WhistleOut Awards, judged annually.
Our Editor's Picks are selected by our team of data experts. We may earn a commission if you click on one of the products listed, but a service provider isn't required to have a commercial relationship with us to be eligible for consideration. See here for more information about how we work.
