felix mobile will increase the price of its sole plan by $5 from September 20, bringing it up to $40 per month. All existing customers and any new customers who sign up and activate before that date will be able to lock in the old $35 per month price.
In addition, felix is currently running a promo where new customers can get their first months at half price, bringing the bill down to $17.50 per month for the initial period. This offer runs until September 19 and requires the promo code FELIX50.
felix is an unusual telco in that it has just a single mobile plan with unlimited data. The catch is that speeds are capped to 20Mbps. That's slower than the 50 to 100Mbps 4G networks are capable of in metro areas, but still fast enough for most online activities.
In addition, felix plants a tree per month for each active customer.
Other than the new price, all felix plan inclusions the same, including the speed cap, and pricing for add-ons like an international roaming pack.
At $40 per month, felix will be competing with mobile plans that have rather generous data allowances. Kogan Mobile, for example, offers 80GB for $40 per month, and is also powered by the Vodafone network. While that's not unlimited, that kind of data allowance should be more than enough for the average phone user.
Here's a look at postpaid SIM-only plans that start at $40 per month:
a felix spokesperson told WhistleOut this is the first time the company has increased its prices, and not a decision it made lightly.
"We will be making a small monthly increase to the price of our mobile plan for new customers. This will allow us to continue investing in our products, services and network capability to provide a greater customer experience," said the spokesperson.
"We are also making sure our existing customers won’t pay a cent more, so they can continue using our award-winning, unlimited data mobile service for just $35 a month."
felix is the latest telco to increase prices on mobile plans in recent months. Aussie Broadband upped plan fees earlier this month, while Telstra, Belong, and Boost Mobile all did the same at the start of July.
