Virgin has eliminated its $90 plan option and replaced it with two new ones at $80 and $100 per month, respectively. In an unexpected twist, the $80 plan actually offers more data than the old $90 plan did.

Both plans have been included in the recently-extended bonus 1GB of data deal that Virgin is offering with most of its post-paid plans.

$80 plan

The $80 base plan offers unlimited calls and texts within Australia and 4GB of data. On the bonus data deal that turns in to 5GB. Previously the old $90 plan offered just 3GB of data (4GB on the deal), so it’s nice to see Virgin reducing costs while increasing inclusions here.

There’s also $150 of calls and texts to international numbers, for anyone that has overseas commitments or relatives.

$100 plan

The $100 plan also offers unlimited calls and texts within Australia, but with 6GB of data (7GB on the current deal).

The international calls & text inclusion is increased to $300 of usage.

Data add-on changes

Virgin has also altered its data add-on packs. Now they are on a month-to-month basis, instead of a 24-month subscription. This is great. It means that you can simply call up and increase your cap if you think you’re going to have a heavy month. It also means you can stop paying at any time if your usage suddenly decreases for one reason or another.

Even better, the amount of data included in the $5 monthly add-on has doubled from 250MB to $500MB. That essentially equal’s Optus’ $10 per 1GB overuse system, at least in terms of price. Of course, with Virgin you’ll still be charged 5.2c per-MB for overuse if you forget to request a data pack for the month.
