Optus offers Virgin Mobile customers exclusive plans, Virgin sales end June 15

Last week news broke that Virgin Mobile will be phased out of existence over the next two years, and we now finally know a little more about what this means for current customers.

Parent company Optus today announced that Virgin Mobile will stop selling new services on June 15, and that all Virgin Mobile retail stores will be closed by the end of the June.

Existing Virgin Mobile customers will be able to continue to use their phone plan without interruption for the time being, and will still be able to use the Virgin website and Virgin Mobile App for account management and paying bills. Virgin Mobile customers will also be able to visit Optus retail stores for sales enquiries, replacement SIM cards, and handset repairs.

But in an effort to offer Virgin Mobile customers a reason to switch, Optus are now offering generous discounts for Virgin customers who port to Optus, including the option of waiving the cost of cancelling a current contract.

For example, a Virgin customer who ports to Optus can nab a 64GB iPhone X with 10GB of data for $95 per month. A new Optus customer would pay $100 per month and only get 5GB. Here is what you'd be looking at for a new iPhone X on a 24-month contract:

Discounts are also available on 12-month SIM-only contracts. Promotional plans are price as follows:

  • 15GB: $30 per month
  • 20GB: $40 per month
  • 40GB: $50 per month
  • 60GB: $60 per month

These all include unlimited talk and text, an Optus Sport subscription, and data-free streaming through services including Spotify, Google Play Music, Netflix, and Stan. You'll also get at least 300 international minutes. Here are the details:

Selection of plans available under Optus' promotional SIM-only deal

Each of these are significantly better value than what Optus offers normally. For example, you'd typically pay $45 per month for 15GB of data on a 12-month SIM-only plan, and you'd need to pay another $5 for data-free video. Optus' standard SIM-only plans are as follows.

We've seen also an example where Optus offered to waive a Virgin Mobile customer's entire early exit fee (almost $400) as incentive for recontracting with Optus.

These offers may vary from person to person (especially with regards for early exit fees), but so far, the 12-month and 24-month contract offers appear to be identical for all Virgin Mobile customers. At time of writing, for is no fixed end date for these promotional plans.
