Optus has confirmed that it intends to kill off the Virgin Mobile brand, phasing it out over the next two years. While Optus has been scant with details as to what exactly the change will mean for customers, a spokesperson said that Virgin Mobile customers will be able to continue using their service in the same way they always have for the time being.
"We will be contacting them in the coming days to let them know more about the changes and their future options," said the spokesperson.
Our guess is you'll have two choices: port over to Optus directly, or leave.
At time of writing, new customers can still sign-up for a Virgin Mobile plan and there is no notice of the closure on either the Optus or Virgin website.
While Virgin Mobile is wholly owned by Optus, it operates an independent business with its own sales, management, market, and support staff. In phasing out the Virgin brand, Optus is essentially looking to streamline its operations.
As part of the closure, all Virgin Mobile stores around Australia will be shut down. Virgin Mobile employees will be considered for vacancies across the Optus business.
If you want to get out early, you can always consider another plan on the Optus mobile network. Here's a couple of SIM-only plans with at least 10GB of data:
