Telstra today announced it will be increasing the price of all of postpaid mobile plans as of tomorrow, but in exchange, will be adding more data. All Telstra SIM-only plans will be see a price rise of between $5 and $15, and get at least 10GB more data.
The changes are as follows:
- Telstra Small Plan: Was $50 per month with 30GB, now $55 per month with 40GB
- Telstra Medium Plan: Was $60 per month with 60GB, now $65 per month with 80GB
- Telstra Large Plan: Was $80 per month with 100GB, now $85 per month with 120GB
- Telstra Extra Large Plan: Was $100 per month 150GB, now $115 per month with 180GB
These plans can also be paired with a new device.
In addition, 5G connectivity is now include as a standard feature on all Telstra postpaid plans other than the Small $55 per month option. Telstra originally intended to charge customers not on a Large or Extra Large plan a further $15 per month for 5G network access. In addition, 5G is available to customers spending at least $60 on a prepaid recharge.
Customers with a 5G handset on an existing Small plan will be migrated to the new Medium plan. While this will technically cost an extra $15 per month, Telstra will waive the charge for the first 12 months. All other Telstra customers - including those on older plans - will continue to get 5G access until September 30, at which point they will need to swap to a new Telstra plan if they want next-gen connectivity.
Notably, all customers on one of Telstra's current plans - anyone who signed up after June 25, 2019 - will be swapped over to one of these new plans before the end of September, which is a somewhat unprecedented move.
Typically, when a customer has signed up a for a plan, they're able to stay on it indefinitely, without any price rises or data allowance changes. The one exception to this is plans that are more than a couple of years old; after a certain number of years, telcos may ask you to change your plan to a more current option to simplify internal admin. This normally happens years after a plan is discontinued, rather than months.
To soften the blow, Telstra waive the price difference for existing customers being upgraded for the first 12 months.
In addition, customers swapping to the new plans will get a three month subscription to Binge. This can be bumped to six months if you're a Telstra Plus member, nine months if you've got silver status, or a whole year if you're gold.
