Telstra has provided an update following last night's identification of a secondary issue following yesterday's major network outage.
Speaking to the media, Telstra CFO (and Acting CEO) Michael Ackland said that the nature of this problem only became apparent as the carrier resolved the original outage.
"In these cases, some people calling Triple Zero received an error message, and their phone would then try to connect to an alternative mobile network."
"This was a consequence of the same software defect behind yesterday’s outage. While the original issue was addressed, this one remained ongoing and needed to be fixed in a different way."
Ackland said that the Telstra team had made significant progress overnight in reducing the volume of failed calls to Triple Zero.
According to him, the company has not needed to conduct any welfare checks following failed calls since the solution was put in place.
"Mobile networks are complex, and we’re continuing to work through further changes to make sure we have the most robust solution in place."
"Customers can feel confident calling Triple Zero," he said.
