A number of Telstra-powered mobile providers are now offering 5G connectivity on cheaper SIM-only mobile plans. These include Exetel, Woolworths Mobile, numobile, and MATE, with plans starting as low as $28 per month on Exetel.
These are the cheapest plans with 5G from each of these providers:
There are two catches to be aware of, however.
Firstly, 5G connectivity on these plans is being pitched as a "free trial". Customers will only get access to the next-generation network until February 28. After this point, customers on eligible plans will no longer have access to 5G.
Secondly, these 5G plans have speeds capped to 100Mbps. This is the same speed cap we've seen on Belong - Telstra's budget brand - which recently added 5G to all of its SIM-only plans.
While speed is often touted as one of 5G's key benefits, 100Mbps is still more than enough for any common mobile task. 5G also has enhanced network capacity, which can help prevent congestion. Lastly, 5G has better latency and upload speeds than 4G.
Existing customers on an eligible Exetel, Woolworths Mobile, numobile, or MATE plan won't need to do anything to get 5G enabled. You'll just need to have a 5G phone and be in a Telstra 5G coverage area to take advantage of it.
Until recently, Telstra network providers only offered a single high-end 5G plan, typically priced around the $60 per month price-point at a minimum.
