Optus is launching its new MVNO gomo with a bang: if you sign-up to a gomo plan before February 28 next year, you'll get three months of free service after paying for your first three months.
While you have to spend cash on your plan up front, the deal still works out to be pretty good value. gomo's sole plan includes 18GB for $25 on a 30-day recharge. If you stay for the entire six months, you're effectively paying $12.50 per month for your first half-year with the provider. Since the plan is contract-free, you can always leave after your free months run out.
Here's are competing options in a similar price range:
TPG currently has the standout offer, offering 25GB for $15 per month for your first six months with the telco. You'll then pay $29.99 per month thereafter, but the plan is contract-free so you're free to leave whenever. TPG is powered by the Vodafone network.
Moose Mobile also has a standout deal, slinging 20GB for $21.80 per month. This data allowance will only last for your first two years, but two years is a hell of a long time to stay on the one plan anyway. Moose is powered by the Optus network.
While gomo doesn't quite stack up as well in terms of data per dollar, the effective price of your free three months does make it worth considering.
gomo's plan lets you bank up to 200GB of unused data and includes unlimited international calls to 15 countries. These are Canada, mainland China, France, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Ireland, Japan, Malaysia, New Zealand, Singapore, South Korea, Thailand, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Note that you can't call any country not included on this list using your gomo plan.
If you need extra data, gomo offers 5GB top-ups for $5. Given the standard rate of excess data still tends to be $10 per gigabyte, it's a pretty generous offer.
gomo is powered by the Optus 4G network but doesn't have access to 5G at this stage. SpinTel is currently the only Optus MVNO with 5G connectivity.
The launch of gomo comes hot off the heels of Vodafone launching its own new MVNO last week: felix. While both gomo and felix are ostensibly budget brands that care not for the capitalisation of proper nouns, Vodafone has taken a different approach with felix. felix also offers just a single plan, but it includes unlimited data capped at speeds of 5Mbps. In practice, 5Mbps is still fast enough to browse the web, stream music and HD video, and fall into a TikTok spiral, but it's a far cry from full speed 4G we've come to expect.
