Hot off the heels of Samsung's Galaxy S10 5G launch, OPPO is following up with a 5G smartphone of its own: the OPPO Reno 5G. Pre-orders for the Reno 5G start tomorrow through Telstra and JB Hi-Fi, with the phone retailing for $1,499 outright.
Anyone who pre-orders ahead of the Reno 5G's June 11 launch will receive a bonus set of Bose QC35 noise cancelling headphones, valued at $499.95. If you miss the pre-order period, you'll get Bose SoundSport Free Wireless Earphones instead, valued at $299. This will run for about four weeks.
If you're not quite ready to get a 5G smartphone, OPPO is also launching a 4G variant - the OPPO Reno 10x Zoom - at $1,199 outright. It will also go on sale on June 11, but OPPO isn't taking pre-orders for the Reno 10x Zoom. However, you'll still get a bonus pair of Bose's SoundSport Free Wireless Earphones with your purchase.

Both the Reno 5G and Reno 10x Zoom are identical in terms of looks and hardware. The pair share a notchless design with a pop-up shark fin front-facing 16MP camera that slides up whenever you want to take a selfie. OPPO says the fin has "intelligent drop protection" that will hide the camera if it seems like the phone is falling. Instead of facial recognition, the Reno devices all use an in-screen fingerprint reader for biometric authentication.
Both phones have a triple rear-facing camera configurations capable of 10x software assisted zoom, including an 8MP 120-degree ultra-wide angle lens with an equivalent focal length of 16mm, a 48MP primary lens with an equivalent focus length of 26mm, and a 13MP telephoto lens with an equivalent focal length of 130mm.

OPPO's 10x solution makes use of a periscope design where the angle of the telephoto lens is rotated by 90 degrees. This allows for a deeper zoom without making the phone much chunkier - both phones are only 9.3mm thick. A periscope-style prism is used to adjust the path of the light entering the camera to match that of the lens. This is similar to what Huawei has used for the P30 Pro. In addition to 10x hybrid zoom, the Reno can zoom in further digitally, up to a factor of 60x.
Other than 5G connectivity, the Reno 5G and Reno 10x Zoom share the same hardware. The key specs include a 6.6-inch 1080p+ display, a Snapdragon 855 processor, 8GB of RAM, 256GB of storage, 48MP + 8MP + 13MP rear-facing cameras, and a 4,065mAh battery. There is one small difference however: the Reno 5G is single-SIM only, whereas the Reno 10x Zoom will also be available in a dual SIM model.
Both the Reno 5G and Reno 10x Zoom will be available in a choice of "Ocean Green" and "Jet Black".
You'll find the Reno 5G at Telstra and JB Hi-Fi. Here are Telstra's Reno 5G plans:
You'll be able to buy the Reno 10x Zoom through Telstra, JB Hi-Fi, The Good Guys, Officeworks, Mobileciti, Woolworths Mobile, Wireless1, and TeleChoice.
It is of course worth noting that Telstra's 5G network is still in the early stages of roll-out. Limited coverage is currently available in Adelaide, Brisbane, Canberra, on the Gold Coast, Hobart, Launceston, Melbourne, Perth, Sydney, and Toowoomba, and only in select areas.
