After months of delays, Google's Pixel 4a is finally available for pre-order. Priced at $599 outright, you'll be able to order Google's new budget Pixel from today ahead of a September 10 release date.
As with the Pixel 3a before it, photography is a clear focus for the Pixel 4a. It shares its primary camera with the Pixel 4, which retails for almost twice as much, at $1,049 outright for a 64GB model. While you don't get a secondary zoom lens, the Pixel 4a still has the full host of camera features you'll find in the Pixel 4, including night mode and astrophotography mode.
The Pixel 4a also benefits from a fresher look, featuring slimmer bezels than what we saw on the Pixel 3a and a camera cut-out display. However, the body is still plastic rather than glass, and you've got a classic rear-facing fingerprint sensor rather than facial recognition.
While the Pixel 4a shares the Pixel 4's primary camera lens and computational photography prowess, there are a few key differences between the two. The Pixel 4a has a slightly larger display, measuring in at 5.8-inches, while the Pixel 4 has a 5.7-inch display. That being said, the Pixel 4a display only runs at 60Hz, while the Pixel 4 has a smoother 90Hz refresh rate.
Key specifications for the Pixel 4a include a 5.81-inch 1080p+ display, a Snapdragon 730G processor, 6GB of RAM, 128GB of non-expandable storage, a 12.2MP rear-facing camera, and a 3,140mAh battery. The Pixel 4a has eSIM support.
Notably, the Pixel 4a is $50 cheaper than last year's Pixel 3a, which was already an incredible value proposition. Despite this, you're getting twice as much storage out of the box.
You can pre-order the Pixel 4a outright from the Google Store, JB Hi-Fi, and Harvey Norman now ahead of a September 10 online release date. If you'd prefer the Pixel 4a on a plan, you'll be able to grab it from Vodafone. Officeworks will also be ranging the Pixel 4a come September 10. You won't find the Pixel 4a in brick-and-mortar stores until mid-October. It will only be available in black.
If you pick up a Pixel 4a, you can get yourself a three-month free trial of YouTube Premium, Google One, and the newly Google Play Pass. These free trials are only available if you haven't signed up for these services in the past, however.
In addition, Google also confirmed that it plans to release a 5G Pixel 4a alongside the Pixel 5 in the spring. We're expecting the Pixel 4a and Pixel 4a 5G to be mostly identical, other than the processor. While the Pixel 4a is powered by a Snapdragon 730G processor, the Pixel 4a 5G will almost certainly tout a 5G-ready Snapdragon 765G.
