Aussie Broadband is set to end its MVNO agreement with Telstra and swap its mobile plans to the Optus network by the middle of 2021. While Aussie Broadband is only able to access part of the Telstra network - known as the Telstra wholesale network - under its current agreement, moving to Optus will mean its new mobile plans will also have 5G connectivity.
"We will be launching on the 5G network for our mobiles in the fourth quarter of FY21," said Aussie Broadband General Manager of Marketing and Corporate Strategy, Matthew Kusi-Appauh.
At present, SpinTel is the only MVNO on the Optus network to offer 5G mobile broadband plans. Aussie Broadband has yet to provide details as to what its new mobile plans may look like, but SpinTel's 5G mobile plans start at $45 per month with a 50GB allowance. It is however currently offering a $5 per month discount for a customer's first six months. Optus' own 5G plans start at $39 per month with 10GB.
Aussie Broadband intends to offer a range of handsets when it launches its new Optus-powered plans, but has yet to confirm what devices it will stock. Existing Aussie Broadband mobile customers will be migrated across to the Optus network.
The deal also allows Aussie Broadband to resell Optus 5G fixed wireless broadband, but Kusi-Appauh says the telco doesn't have plans to launch a 5G home internet product at this stage. Aussie Broadband has however confirmed it will offer 4G backup for both residential and business customers when it transitions to the Optus network.
