Amazon Australia is the latest retailer to dip its toes into the world of refurbished smartphones. The e-commerce giant today launched its "Renewed" program, in which it sells like new products at lower prices, including smartphones, computers, tablet, and audio products.
At present, the Renewed smartphone range primarily includes devices from Apple and Samsung, ranging as far back as the iPhone 6 and Galaxy S7. However, we'd recommend not going older than the iPhone 7 and Galaxy S8. A renewed iPhone 7 sells for a little under $400 on Amazon, depending on what colour you're after.
One of Amazon's partners for Renewed is Alegre, who also supplies second-hand smartphones for Boost Mobile. Alegre says it performs a 72-point check to ensure all refurbished phones perform at a high standard and have enough battery capacity left. In addition, it only sources Australian compliant phones that have been wiped and cross-checked against a police database.
Refurbished smartphones may have minor cosmetic damage including scuffing or light scratches on the screen, but won't have any cracks. You can read more about Alegre's refurbishing process here.
All the devices sold under Amazon's "Renewed" program come with a minimum six-month selling partner warranty.
