iiNet has increased the price of some of its NBN plans in the lead-up to NBN Co’s wholesale price increases on July 1. This move is about a month ahead of when we normally expect to see most telcos boost NBN pricing each year.
So, what changes has iiNet made and how do they compare to NBN Co’s wholesale rises?
For its fixed-line plans, iiNet raised the price of its NBN 25 plan by $3 per month and added $5 per month to its NBN 50, NBN 750, and NBN 1000 monthly fees The other fixed-line plans, like NBN 100 and NBN 500, have remained the same price, while NBN 12 has been cut.
For Fixed Wireless NBN, iiNet increased its NBN 25 plan by $3 per month and outright discontinued its NBN 12 product.
Here’s a quick overview of the before and after standard pricing, after any introductory offers have ended:
| NBN plan | New price | Old price | Price increase |
|---|---|---|---|
| NBN 12 | $74.99 | Discontinued | – |
| NBN 25 | $79.99 | $76.99 | $3 |
| NBN 50 | $89.99 | $84.99 | $5 |
| NBN 750 | $104.99 | $99.99 | $5 |
| NBN 1000 | $114.99 | $109.99 | $5 |
| Fixed Wireless NBN 12 | $74.99 | Discontinued | – |
| Fixed Wireless NBN 25 | $79.99 | $76.99 | $3 |
Refreshingly, iiNet is one of the few providers so far to follow NBN Co's lead and increase the price of NBN 25 by less than other speed tiers – though admittedly the telco's NBN 100 and NBN 500 plans got no bump, so are still better off. As such, the new wholesale pricing from NBN Co won't be placed squarely on the shoulders of customers on iiNet's lowest-cost plans, as it will be with the NBN price increases from Telstra, Optus, and Belong.
The specific dollar amount increases from iiNet are roughly a couple of bucks higher than the wholesale hikes from NBN Co, but that's to be expected. Wholesale NBN isn't the only rising cost telcos need to account for every year, plus iiNet's choice to leave NBN 100 and NBN 500 plan pricing untouched means those costs need to be made up elsewhere.
Overall, iiNet's new NBN pricing isn't outside what we expect to see from other telcos, apart from the early timing and the discontinuation of its NBN 12 plans. But, if this is the push you needed to start looking at alternatives, you can see a range of cheap NBN plans below. Just keep in mind this is all current pricing, subject to going up over the next month or so.
