Apple isn't always known for playing well with others, but come December 17, Amazon Echo owners will be access Apple Music through their smart speakers.
If you've got an Apple Music subscription and an Alexa-powered device, you'll be able to ask Amazon's AI to play songs, albums, playlists and more. To do so, you'll need to enable the Apple Music skill in the Alexa app and link your account.
While Apple typically restricts its software and services to its own hardware, it has been a bit more liberal with Apple Music. Shortly after it launched on iOS, Apple Music was also made available for Android.
Music is the predominant use case for smart speakers, so bringing Apple Music to Echo makes a lot of sense from Apple's perspective. As more and more households buy into smart speakers, Apple would run the risk of losing Apple Music subscribers to services compatible with devices like Echo.
Alexa speakers are currently compatible with Amazon Prime Music, Spotify, Pandora, iHeartRadio, and TuneIn. Presently, HomePod is the only smart speaker compatible with Apple Music.
