Amazon today announced local availability for the Ring Intercom, a smart home doodad that adds internet connectivity to old-school intercom systems.
The Ring Intercom effectively taps into an apartment or home's existing intercom system and extends the functionality. Once it is set up, users will get notifications for their intercom on their phone, and can also unlock a building door remotely. The Ring app also facilitates two-way audio, and if an intercom supports video, it will also be beamed through to the Ring app.
Ring Intercom can also use the Ring app to give people access to their building door with a "guest key". These can be scheduled for certain times on certain days. This won't allow elevator access where a fob is needed, however, and a key is naturally still required for access to individual apartments
Amazon is pitching the Ring Intercom as a renter-friendly accessory. While installation requires wiring Ring Intercom to the existing intercom, none of the modifications are permanent, and the unit is battery powered. An Amazon spokesperson told WhistleOut the process should take about 50 minutes. The spokesperson also recommended those living in an apartment check with their strata or body committee before buying a Ring Intercom.
The Ring Intercom should work with "most" intercoms in Australia, but not necessarily all. There's a compatibility checker available on Amazon's page for the Ring Intercom. A Ring subscription lets users store up to 180 days of audio or video history, but isn't necessary to use the Ring Intercom.
The Ring Intercom is available now, priced at $189. Like other Ring products, it is compatible with both iPhone and Android devices.
