Woolworth’s is set to return to the Aussie mobile landscape, with the launch of a new Prepaid Mobile product called Woolworth’s Connect on June 15.
IT’s been 18-months since the supermarket giant has sold Woolworth’s branded phone services for use in Australia, since Woolworth’s Mobile shut down in September 2013. Woolworth’s has only sold global roaming services for travellers in the interim.
This new incarnation sees a couple of big changes to the original Woolworth’s service. Firstly, there is only two plans at launch and both are Prepaid. Woolworth’s will also rely on a different network, switching to the Telstra 3G network for its new Connect product.
As mentioned, there will only be two Prepaid options at launch. Both include reasonably generous call and data inclusions, but are not the best in market today.
| Woolworth’s Connect Plan | Calling and Messaging | Data | Price for Everyday Rewards members |
|---|---|---|---|
|
$30 Recharge |
$650 value for calls (Calls at 90c per min) Unlimited SMS |
1.5GB (Telstra 3G network) |
$27 per recharge |
|
$45 Recharge |
$1500 value for calls (Calls at 90c per min) Unlimited SMS |
3.5GB (Telstra 3G network) |
$40.50 per recharge |
As a early adopters bonus, customers who pick up a $30 recharge before 31 July 2015 get a bonus 1GB data.
How does this stack up?
The big drawcard for Woolworth’s Connect is access to the Telstra 3G network, which Boost Mobile, Aldi Mobile and Telechoice currently offer. Subscribers of any of these services are restricted to HSPA data speeds (technically known as 3.5G), and while it might sound disappointing not to get the blazing fast speeds of Telstra 4G network, most users shouldn’t notice the difference.
Price wise, WoolWorth’s Connect is obviously targeting competitor grocery vendor Aldi Mobile, which currently offers near-identical $30 and $45 Prepaid options.
Boost Mobile’s hero Prepaid plan is its $40 Ultra Recharge, with 3GB data and unlimited calls and messages. Telechoice has a similar $40 plan, with 3GB data and practically unlimited calls and SMS, but on Postpaid contract terms.
To get a more complete look at whether Woolworth's is offering great value, you should take a few providers on different networks into consideration.
