There aren't many opportunities to find savings for bigger families. More family members usually just means more of well, everything.
Vodafone's Bundle & Save option is one way to save big on your family's monthly mobile fees.
The savings are pretty simple. You add a second plan to your account, and you'll save $5 on the monthly bill. If you add a third plan to your account, you'll get a bigger $15 saving on that plan, plus the $5 off your bill for plan number two.
If we assume everyone is on Vodafone's 60GB plan for $53 per month, then here's what that looks like:
| Plan | Discount | Effective Cost | Running Total |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | No discount | $53 | $53 |
| 2 | $5 off | $48 | $101 |
| 3 | $15 off | $38 | $139 |
| 4 | $15 off | $38 | $177 |
| 5 | $15 off | $38 | $215 |
| 6 | $15 off | $38 | $253 |
| 7 | $15 off | $38 | $291 |
| 8 | $15 off | $38 | $329 |
| 9 | $15 off | $38 | $367 |
| 10 | $15 off | $38 | $405 |
With the Bundle and Save discount a family with 10 mobile plans would pay $405 a saving of $125 compared with paying $530 full price. At the moment, Vodafone is also offering 50% off plan fees for the first six months, so your savings could be even greater.
Here's a look at Vodafone's SIM-only plans:
Bundle & Save used to be applied as a 5% discount per additional plan on your account, up to a maximum of four additional plans and 20% off your total bill.
The older model worked ever so slightly better, depending on how many plans you had. If you had five plans at $53 per month, you'd have spent $212 rather than $215 on the new model. But if you only had four plans total, the new model works out better by $3. It's much of a muchness.
But the new model is clearer and provides the discount to larger groups. One last example, a family paying for six plans under the old model would've paid $265 per month, but they'll save $12 under the newer system.
The new model no longer allows customers to save on tablet or mobile broadband plans.
A Vodafone spokesperson told WhistleOut, "By moving with a flat monthly discount for our Bundle & Save offer, it is now easier for customers to understand and track their savings as they add more eligible mobile services."
Vodafone's Bundle & Save options are competitive even against its own MVNOs. These smaller providers don't have the same overheads as Telstra, Optus and Vodafone and can usually offer plans at a much lower price point.
iiNet and TPG, for example (both on the Vodafone network), both have plans with 100GB for $22.50 per month (for the first six months, $45 ongoing). A family of five would spend $112.50 per month while under the honeymoon pricing and then $225 per month afterwards.
Once you hit the ongoing price, you'd be better off being with Vodafone outright. And if you had 10 plans? That's $450 ongoing with the MVNOs but just $415 with Vodafone. It's worth considering all your options.
