Telstra 4G footprint will expand by Christmas, with the telco announcing the expansion of its LTE network to include 200 new regional towns across the country, offering coverage to 85% of the Australian population.
An additional 1500 base stations will be upgraded to be compatible with the 1800MHz 4G frequency, on top of more than 2000 upgraded stations in the network already.
The expansion will touch all Australian states but none of its territories, with towns like Stawell in Victoria, Mudgee and Bateman's Bay in NSW, Innisfail and Kingaroy in Queensland, Margaret River in Western Australia and Latrobe in Tasmania.
Telstra says it is targeting 'holiday hotspots' in this phase of its network expansion. Telstra has only released the names of a portion of the town in the expansion; you can see this list below.
The telco's 4G LTE network launched in capital cities in Australia in September 2011. Since then it has expanded to cover 66% of the population, but Telstra's count.
2.1-million 4G devices are now active on the network, with 1.7-million of those being smartphones. Surprisingly, only 150,000 of those devices are tablets.
