Thought the iPhone X's $1,579 starting price was expensive? Well, strap yourself in cause Wall Street Journal sources claim that Samsung is set to launch a foldable smartphone at the start of next year with a price-tag surpassing USD$1,500. That converts to over $2,000 locally.
Staff have previously confirmed Samsung was working on foldable displays and devices, and the company was officially granted patent regarding such a design in May this year.
Codenamed "Winner" internally (although many expect Samsung to call it the Galaxy X), the device is expected to have a 7-inch screen that will fold in half like a wallet. Wall Street Journal's sources claim it will also have a smaller display on the front that's still visible when the phone is folded.
Past rumours have suggested that Samsung is looking to announced its foldable phone in January next year as part of the CES trade show in Las Vegas, ahead of unveiled the Galaxy S10 at Mobile World Congress at the end of February.
Winner / Galaxy X stock will purportedly be quite limited at launch.
While a foldable phone is quite novel, Samsung isn't the first company to have experimented with such an idea. ZTE launched a foldable phone called the Axon M at the end of last year, but it was never available in Australia. The Axom M has two discrete displays however, whereas it's expected that Samsung's device will have a single bendable OLED display.
