Despite the explosive baggage associated with the Note moniker, Samsung has confirmed that it will bring a Galaxy Note 8 to market, tarnished brand in tow. The Note 7 may have been the punch line to plenty of jokes, featured in countless airline safety announcements, and even made it into a Grand Theft Auto mod, but company mobile chief D.J. Koh confirmed that the Note will live on in an interview with CNET.
"I will bring back a better, safer and very innovative Note 8," Koh told CNET.
Despite the recall, Koh said the Note brand attracted a hardcore following of loyal customers that Samsung doesn't want to walk away from.
"We found through the investigative process, we knew there are lots and lots of loyal Note customers."
Given the number of Note 7 fanatics who didn't want to return their phone - to the point where carriers had to prevent the device from connecting to their networks - it's certainly a decision that makes sense.
If history repeats itself, Samsung will likely unveil the Note 8 around August or September.
The news follows Samsung's press conference where it detailed exactly what went wrong with the Note 7. As initially suspected, battery problems were to blame for both the original Note 7's and replacement Note 7's unfortunate tendency to catch fire. Different issues affected both batteries, however. In response to this, Samsung has pledged to put all future smartphone batteries through a new eight-step testing process.
