
Qualcomm today announced its Snapdragon 700 processor, a new chipset designed for "affordable premium" smartphones. While it sits below the top Snapdragon 845, Qualcomm says its twice as fast at handling AI related tasks and 30% more power efficient than its previous second best chip, the Snapdragon 660.
"The Snapdragon 700 Mobile Platform Series will bring premium tier technologies and features into more affordable devices," said Qualcomm's General Manager for Mobile, Alex Katouzian “The Snapdragon 700 Series is optimised to support the experiences consumers have come to expect from the most advanced mobile devices at a lower price point."
In addition to performance upgrades, on the board image signal processor will enable more affordable smartphones to better implement functionality such as AI-powered scene detection, and slow-motion video.
Qualcomm expects the Snapdragon 700 to be utilised by the top-end devices coming out of Chinese smartphone manufacturers, such as OPPO.
Snapdragon 700 powered smartphones should be available around the second half of the year.
