Optus was initially scheduled to shut down its 2G mobile services this Saturday, but it looks like the telco's OG network will be hanging around for a little bit longer. The telco has decided to stagger its big 2G turn off, and some parts of Australia will still have access until August.
If you're in the Northern Territory or Western Australia, you'll be among the first to lose 2G, with services shutting off from April 3. Otherwise, Optus has yet to confirm exactly when other states will be losing 2G coverage.
In the lead up to the shut down, Optus Managing Director of Networks Dennis Wong says Optus has spent the last year or so getting in touch customers still using 2G devices.
"Our priority has been to prepare our customers for this change and ensure they have sufficient time to upgrade to newer devices," said Wong. "This has involved a range of letters, emails and texts sent over the past 11 months to help them with the transition as much as possible."
Telcos relying on the Optus network will also be affected by the 2G shutdown. This includes Virgin Mobile, Amaysim, Vaya, Yomojo, Jeenee, and iiNet.
Telstra switched off its 2G network at the end of last year, and Vodafone has scheduled its shut down for this coming September.
If you've still got a 2G phone, you'll need to upgrade if you want to keep on making phone calls and sending messages. To start, why not take a look at our phone finder?
