Optus today announced it has inked an agreement with Netflix to offer customers 6-months free subscription to the soon-to-be launched streaming movie service.
New and re-contracting Optus customers, signing up for a 24-month term on either on select Home Broadband Bundles, PostPaid Phone Plans or PostPaid Mobile Broadband plans will get free Netflix movies for 6-months. The value of this is unknown, as Netflix is yet to release pricing, but it is believed to be worth about $60 to $75.
“Partnering with the world’s largest and most recognised internet TV service is a significant milestone for Optus as we look to bring a more superior TV experience to customers across our fixed and mobile platforms,” said Optus CEO Allen Lew in a statement.

Best with Fetch Bundles
While the freebie will be welcomed by all eligible Optus customers, it will be those signing up to Fetch TV Broadband bundles who will enjoy the service most. Optus has already committed to making Netflix downloads unmetered for its broadband customers, meaning the huge files downloaded while watching movies will not count towards their monthly bills.
Better still, Fetch TV will play host to a dedicated Netflix app, like Xbox consoles. Customers will easily be able to switch between Free-To-Air TV and Netflix content, without leaving the sofa. This is a huge boost in functionality for the Fetch TV box, which already hosts its own Movie Box section and a video-on-demand rental service for new release titles.
This partnership with Netflix is doubly important for both Optus and Fetch TV now, with major competitor Telstra and its part-owned Foxtel brand recently launching improved home entertainment bundles of their own. Though the addition of Netflix still leaves Fetch TV way behind in the quantity of content it can offer compared to Foxtel, it certainly makes it a fair more appealing alternative at its much lower monthly fee.
