Optus today announce results from a recent trial of new 4.5G networking technology, claiming speeds up to 1.41Gbps.

The trial in partnership with Huawei was conducted in Newcastle, NSW in what Optus refers to  as a Gigasite.

The 4.5G tests denonstrate what is capable using a combination of technology protocols, including carrier aggregation -- where separate bands of spectrum are paired and share the load of a single stream.

4.5G, as the name suggests, is a technological stepping stone between current 4G tech and future 5G networks. A similar approach was achieved in the last generation of mobile networks, with all of the Australian networks offering 3.5G  services which incorporated similar carrier aggregation concepts.
