If you're a P-Plater or learner driver in New South Wales, you're no longer allowed to use your phone while driving. This includes using a phone in the hands-free mode, using the phone's on-board GPS, playing music or having a conversation through the phone's loud speaker, or sending text messages. Learner and provisional licence holders must be parked out of the line of traffic to use a mobile phone in any way.
While P1 (red) and learner drivers have always been subject to these restrictions, they now also apply to P2 (green) plate holders. Failing to adhere to these new restrictions will see drivers penalised with four demerit points.
Use of a dedicated GPS that is not a mobile phone is still allowed for all L and P plate drivers.
