HMD Global - the maker of Nokia phones - has been busy. Fresh after launching four new Android smartphones, it's announced another three: the Nokia 5.1 (pictured above), the Nokia 3.1, and the Nokia 2.1
All three are budget devices, which should retail for under $300 (based on conversions from foreign pricing). The phones succeed last year's Nokia 5, 3, and 2. While the 5 and 3 launched in Australia, the 2 didn't make it to our shores. The biggest change with the ".1" updates is the move to 18:9 displays on the Nokia 5.1 and Nokia 3.1. The Nokia 2.1 still has a standard 16:9 display.
The Nokia 5.1 and Nokia 3.1 will both run Android One, while the Nokia 2.1 will ship with Android Go.
Android One is an unmodified version of Android maintained by Google rather than the device manufacturer. Google promises that all Android One devices will get at least two years of major operating system updates and regular security updates.
Android Go is a version of Android tuned for faster and smoother performance on entry-level hardware. Apps start 15% faster, the entire OS is smaller so that phones have more available storage out of the box, and Google has redesigned many of its apps to be lighter and less data intensive.
