Motorola isn't giving up on the modular smartphone dream just yet, and is bringing the Moto Z3 Play to Australia on October 4 for $799.
The Moto Z3 Play is the latest device to work with the company's range of Moto Mod accessories. For those not familiar with the phrases, Moto Mods are essentially hot-swappable accessories that can add features to Z-series phones. Initial Mods included battery packs, a zoom camera, and a portable projector.
While the Moto Z3 Play supports the same accessories as past Z-series phones, it's had a slight aesthetic refresh. The display is now a 6.01-inch extra-tall screen, and the back is now glass rather than aluminium. To ensure Mod compatibility, the Moto Z3 Play shares the same physical footprint as past Z-series devices.
Since Moto Mods cover the back of the phone and the extra-tall display has reduced the amount of space on the front of Moto Z3 Play, Motorola has put the fingerprint reader on the side of the device instead. While this is uncommon, we've seen a similar implementation on a couple of Sony smartphones and Samsung's latest midrange phone.
Key specifications for the Moto Z3 Play include a 6.01-inch 1080p+ display, a Snapdragon 636 processor, 4GB of RAM, 64GB of expandable storage, 12MP and 5MP dual rear-facing cameras, dual SIM, and a 3,000mAH battery. It doesn't have a headphone jack.
The $799 Moto Z3 Play will only be available direct through Motorola's online store, with pre-orders kicking off today. The first 50 customers will receive a free Hasselblad zoom camera mod valued at $349.
