Motorola announced a new modular flagship smartphone overnight, and it's very close to being the first 5G handset on the market. While the Moto Z3 itself isn't a 5G phone, you'll be able to add 5G connectivity in early 2019 with a 5G Moto Mod.
For those not familiar with the term, Moto Mods are accessories that can add significant features to Z-series phones. Current Mods included battery packs, a zoom camera, and a portable video projector. A mod that add support for an all new phone network certainly seems a bit more ambitious.
While the Moto Z3 supports the same accessories as past Z-series phones, it's has a bit of a new look. The display is now a 6.01-inch extra-tall screen, and the back is now glass rather than aluminium. To ensure Mod compatibility, the Moto Z3 shares the same physical footprint as past Z-series devices.
Since Moto Mods cover the back of the phone and the extra-tall display has reduced the amount of space on the front of Moto Z3, Motorola has put a fingerprint reader on the side of the device instead. While this is uncommon, we've seen a similar implementation on a couple of Sony smartphones.
Key specifications for the Moto Z3 include a 6.01-inch 1080p+ display, last year's Snapdragon 835 processor, 4GB of RAM, 64GB of expandable storage, dual 12MP rear-facing cameras, and a 3,000mAH battery. It doesn't have a headphone jack.
The specifications might seem a little low-end for a 2018 flagship device, but it will retail for USD$480, which is a little lower than a top of the line device. This converts to about $650 locally, although we're doubtful if we'll actually see the Moto Z3 launch locally. It's predecessor, the Moto Z2, was never available in Australia, but hey, maybe a telco will pick it up to show off their brand new 5G networks next year. Motorola has yet to detail pricing for the 5G Moto Mod.
