Apple has just announced its brand new phones, the iPhone 17 series. That's three upgrades to familiar models and the new iPhone Air, which replaces the Plus.

If lining up in a queue on release day isn't your style, but you still want to grab the one as soon as possible, you can pre-order the iPhone 17, 17 Pro, 17 Pro Max or iPhone Air now, ahead of the September 19 release date.

What are my options to pre-order the iPhone 17?

You can pre-order the iPhone 17 outright through Apple's store or Apple's Amazon page. If you'd like to pair your phone with a mobile plan you can do so through Vodafone, Optus, or Telstra.

Before you make your purchase, here are a few things to consider:

Do you want the iPhone 17 outright or on a plan? You can pre-order an iPhone 17 from a mobile provider as part of a phone plan or as a one-off purchase
Which iPhone 17 model do you want? Decide which of the four models and what storage size you want. Are there any plan extras you might want?
Which iPhone 17 deal is best? Compare providers and their plans to find the best deal and availability for your iPhone 17 pre-order. Even if you've purchased it outright, you might be able to save money by switching to a cheaper provider or plan.

Pre-ordering the iPhone 17 on a plan

The three new iPhone 17 models and the iPhone Air are available on a plan from Vodafone, Optus and Telstra.

Each of these telcos offers phone plans over 12, 24 and 36-month repayment terms. Essentially, the longer the contract, the less you'll pay each month as part of your device repayment. You'll pay more on a shorter term, but you'll own your iPhone 17 outright sooner.

All three telcos effectively charge the same price for each iPhone 17 model, within a few dollars. It's their plans where the real difference lies, mostly in terms of data per dollar value but also in perks and mobile coverage.

What's the cheapest way to pre-order an iPhone 17?

Whether you pre-order your iPhone 17 on a mobile plan or outright, you’ll end up paying roughly the same for the phone itself – barring any special deals that might pop up. The cost difference comes from the mobile plan portion of your overall spend (i.e. your monthly data allowance, network connection, and additional plan perks).

If you purchase your iPhone 17 outright, it gives you the flexibility to sign up to a cheap mobile plan from a smaller provider, effectively saving you money in the long run.

Known as Mobile Virtual Service Operators (MVNOs) these smaller providers buy access to the Telstra, Optus, or Vodafone networks and resell it at a low price. They can do this because they tend to offer no-frills plans, and have fewer overheads forgoing brick and mortar stores for online-only services.

MVNOs offer SIM-only plans, so you have to bring your own handset. If you purchased your iPhone 17 outright, that’s you.

When will I get my iPhone 17 pre-order?

If you pre-order your iPhone 17 between now and the September 19 release date, you should be among the first people in Australia to receive one. Just keep in mind that wait times for more popular models can blow out quickly, so if you want to get an iPhone 17 as early as possible, pre-order sooner rather than later.

People living in major metropolitan areas may very well get theirs on release day, though it might take a couple of days longer than that. If you live further out, it can depend on your location.
