The glass found on upcoming smartphones is about to get tougher. Corning has announced the sixth iteration of Gorilla Glass, the go to reinforced glass solution for most smartphone manufacturers including Apple, Samsung, LG, HTC, Huawei, and OPPO.
Gorilla Glass 6 is said to be more resistant to multiple drops, and in testing, survived an average of 15 drops on to a rough surface from a one metre height. This ostensibly means Gorilla Glass 6 is twice as resilient as the current generation Gorilla Glass 5. Corning also says Gorilla Glass 6 is also more resistant to higher drops, but didn't provide specific measurements.
The higher durability of Gorillas Glass 6 was developed to address the needs of modern smartphone designs, which now regularly tout glass fronts and backs.
Corning says "Gorilla Glass 6 is currently being evaluated by multiple customers, and is expected to reach the market in the next several months".
