Following Telstra's recent price hike announcement, you might be looking to switch to save some cash. Its cheapest 28-day expiry prepaid plan will become $44 for 20GB, while postpaid customers will pay $74 per month for 50GB of data. This will make them some of the most expensive plans in WhistleOut's database of 34 providers at those data amounts.
Here's how pricing is changing for all of Telstra's prepaid 28-day expiry plans:
| Old Pricing | New Pricing |
|---|---|
| $39 for 15GB | $44 for 20GB |
| $49 for 25GB | $54 for 35GB |
| $59 for 35GB | $64 for 45GB |
| $69 for 70GB | $74 for 80GB |
Even if you're already on the cheapest plan, you can still save plenty of money by shopping around. Here's a look at five plans with better value than the incoming Telstra 20GB prepaid plan.
Boost Mobile
Boost Mobile is the only Telstra MVNO that utilises the full Telstra network. At the time of writing, you can get Boost's 25GB plan for $39 per month. Both plans come with download speeds capped up to 150Mbps.
Over 12 months, that's a saving of $65, and you get 60GB more data (not factoring in any bonus data). In terms of value per GB, with Telstra, you're paying more than $2 for every GB of data. Boost Mobile is better at $1.56 per GB.

It is worth noting there is a chance Boost also increases its prices. Boost is also owned by Telstra, and Belong - Telstra's other budget brand - is upping prices on May 5 too.
EZEE Mobile
EZEE Mobile is another provider working on parts of the Telstra network. You get similar coverage for far less money. It's not the full range Telstra and Boost Mobile customers get, but still above Optus and Vodafone.
EZEE's cheapest mobile plan costs $29 with 29GB per 30-day recharge. That means you're only paying $1 per GB of data. Compared with Telstra's plan, over a year you'll save over $200 and get over 100GB of extra data to use.

Dodo
Dodo uses the Optus network which is second to Telstra but still covers 98.5% of the Australian population.
Its cheapest plan is $25 per month for 25GB and comes with download speeds capped to 150Mbps. Because it's a monthly plan, you'll only pay your mobile bill 12 times a year as opposed to the extra 13th charge you need to factor on other plans. Compared with Telstra's plan, you'll save $272 in a calendar year and net yourself an extra 60GB of data.

felix Mobile
felix is another provider worth looking at if you're looking to cut down on costs. felix operates on the Vodafone network which covers 98.4% of Australians.
felix's $25 plan with 25GB of data per month has a download speed cap of 150Mbps. With this plan you'll save over $300 in a calendar year compared with the upcoming 20GB Telstra plan. You'll also get 60GB of extra data.

TPG
TPG's monthly mobile plans have hefty six-month sign-up discounts. Like felix mobile it operates on the Vodafone network.
TPG's 25GB plan costs $12.50 per month (for the first six months) with an ongoing price of $25 per month thereafter. It also has a download speed cap of 150Mbps. With this plan, you'll save $347 in a calendar year compared with the upcoming 20GB Telstra plan. You'll also get 60GB of extra data.
