Amaysim will change the cost of excess data usage on Unlimited plans on March 13, moving to the industry standard of an automatic 1GB top-up for an extra $10.
Currently Amaysim customers pay $0.072 cents per extra MB they use, or $72 per GB.
The same rate will be available to prepaid customers as a manual top-up. Flexi Plan customers can add 1GB to their plan for $10 or 2GB for $15, both with a 28 day expiry.
Now, for the bad news
The dramatic decrease in the cost of excess data usage will be seen as a smart move by many, but Amaysim plans another shift to take place on the same day in March will may not prove to be as popular.
Data-only plans, used in modems and tablets, will move from a 30-day expiry term to 28-days, and fall in line with the expiry period for prepaid Amaysim phone plans.
The move means that long-term customers will pay for an extra recharge each year, from 12 top-ups to 13.
Amaysim made the same change to its phone plan range in March last year, and copped flak for the change from industry observers across the country. Despite also adding more data to the plans, the move to 28-days was described as ‘confusing’ and ‘sneaky’ by Fairfax Media and News Ltd publications.
