amaysim has launched eSIM companion plans for smartwatches, as a free inclusion on its top-end 28-day recharges. Customers who are on its $40 recharge or $50 recharge get a smartwatch eSIM plan - dubbed "Number Link - included at no cost.
This structure contrasts with how every other provider sells eSIM companion plans. Pricing typically ranges from between $5 and $10 per month, depending on the provider.
eSIM companion plans for smartwatches allow users to share their mobile connectivity with an eSIM-enabled smartwatch. That smartwatch can then make phone calls, receive text messages, and access mobile data, independently of the phone it's paired with.
This, for example, lets a user go for a run with just their smartwatch while still having mobile connectivity. Smartwatches from Apple, Samsung, and Google are all available in eSIM-enabled variants, but Pixel Watches don't currently work with amaysim's Number Link.
Naturally, an eSIM companion plan requires a customer to have a mobile plan with the telco in question. You can't have a mobile plan from one provider and an eSIM companion plan from another.
amaysim is the first Optus MVNO to offer a companion eSIM plan, and the fourth MVNO overall. Everyday Mobile, Tangerine, and More are the only other small providers with the functionality, and all are powered by the Telstra network. Telstra, Optus, and Vodafone naturally also sell companion eSIMs.
